Say that to a cop or a judge, and see what they tell you, so I will presume you are kidding here...how would you feel if that was your mother, daughter, or sister that Serena was saying that to? If the lineswoman was wrong, that doesn't give any athlete an excuse to speak to another human being that way. Was it life or death? It is only a sport. With that said, Serena is human and deserves to be forgiven if she decides to acknowledge her mistake and apoligize for it.
Before I even heard any of the audio, I saw a clip on ESPN that showed just the video with no audio and I could clearly read her lips saying "I am going to shove this ball down your fu*&ing throat".
When officlals asked the line judge to describe the offender, she said - "He loooooooook like a man."
So you should be allowed to break the rules a little bit because it's a close semi-final match? Let's pretend that the line judge let this slide, and Clistjers lost the match. Would she be right to be furious about the bad call?
There was no foot fault. If you're going to call a foot fault at that stage of the game, it had better not be ambiguous. Actual contact with the line has to be made. The front of tennis shoes are elevated. That is how they are designed, what makes them tennis shoes. When a service is made, players jump from the balls of their feet, not their toes. You may, at service, be elevated above and well past the baseline and not be called. Continued replays have shown that the bottom surface of Williams's tennis shoe was not in contact with the surface baseline on the serve, which when erroneously called, caused a double fault. That pushed score from 15-30 to 15-40, thus moving her opponent one point away from victory. She should have argued the call, and that's it. Had she persevered, the score would have remained at 15-30, and a chance at recovery. If the Line Judge had not made that mistake - and - Williams had won the volley, the score during that game would have been 30-30, and it is possible she could have turned the tide. Used steam to nher advantage onstead of blowing her steam at the Line Judge. But, by making the bigger mistake of getting infamous on the Line Judge, the score went from 15-40 to Game, Set, Match. From bad to worse, two wrongs do not make an expletive-so-and-so and cliche-filled next-to-last sentence... Still, the fact remains, there was no foot fault.
Instant replay and a challenge system is needed. She got screwed and was pissed about it. I'll bet worse things have been said by some of the men.
Agree on the replay/challenge aspect. Disagree about the rest. Serena was pissed because she was playing terribly all night and couldn't find her rhythm. I have no doubt that the foot fault upset her, but that alone would not have created the tirade that she went on. Was the call absolutely horrible? Yes. Was that the reason Serena lost the match? No.
She would have lost the match regardless. I think what we saw was just built up frustration. They need to work on the rules for the challenge system in general. Most of the players are going to their coaches to see if they should challenge (on court coaching is illegal), and some of them take forever to challenge. Federrer was complaining about how long it took DelPo to challenge in the final.
Strange US Open..... I catch tennis matches every now and again. What surprised me in the early rounds was how many players called for trainers and had to stop play. I don't think I had ever seen that before. The Serena thing really disappointed me on two levels. First, I don't think any player should be allowed to play after threatening a judge or official. I think Serena should have had a long suspension for her outburst. Second, I recall old matches of Jimmy Conners or John Mac and they would go off and go crazy. But, from my recollection, they were much different..... They would say things like "That's F'in BS", "Do you have eyes?" etc.... Serena, no matter how you look at threatened this woman with her life. Kind of tells you the true person behind the racket. I saw the interview she did days after all touched up by her PR person. Nah, I call bs. I don't think she understands the severity of her actions and I think she hurt the sport. I have no interest in seeing her play.
That's what I find funny. I keep hearing, "well John and Jimmy use to yell at the judges all the time." I never have watched tennis, but I dont recall ever hearing about them saying anything remotely close to "...I'll shove this tennis ball down your throat..". Her interview afterwards was just funny to me. She acted like it wasn't a big deal and that she wasn't really angry and that she's just one of those tennis players to is vocal. Yeah, sure.
I watch tennis all the time, and I've been to the U.S. Open every year for the past 11. It's true that Johnny Mac and Connors used to yell at judges but your right, I don't think they ever threatened to kill one of them. I think she should have been disqualified from the tournament and should not have been allowed to play in the doubles championship. She was just pissed that she was going to lose no matter what, and I also think she was happy she had a reason to be disqualified. She has been declaring herself "the no. 1 player" for the past year, then she gets her butt handed to her from a new mom who hasn't played competitively for the past 2 1/2 years...that doesn't sound like the best player to me. I have never liked Serena, I always thought she was just too cocky and I didn't like her whole attitude, and now everyone else can see what type of person she really is.
The #1 ranking for the women is a joke too. How can there be a #1 ranked player that has never won a major? It is hard to watch womens tennis, when you see how badly some of the "top" players lose in the early rounds to nobodys. At the US Open, the majority of the top seeds were gone after the first week.
