The timing is being retarded when you try and rev it fast and also getting a knock sensor activation (on) in the sd2 I am think it is the variator solenoid...

I put a search in google for the ferrari code and it directed me to a ferrari chat page with all the info.
Look for posts by 24000rpm on 05/01/2015. Lots of info and appears its to do with the pnecmatic variator ?
    P 1530 is 1 bank and p 1531 is the other.

Use "Link to PC" mode on the SD-2 and read the cam timing parameters. Compare the LH bank to the RH bank. Post those numbers. In all likelihood, there is a problem (with the variator) based on that code. There is zero mystery as to what bank your connected to as you have to select that when you connect.

Do you think it would be the variator or the solenoide ? There is not much to the variator it self, almost like a chunk of metal :) I believe it's the solenoide that allows oil into the variator allowing it to work.. I didn't think variator go bad except for braking the end off

    Roger,

With the SD-2 hooked up in PC mode, select the Diagnostic Pages and implement the relevant tests. This should answer your question. Both components are potentially suspect. Also, there is much diagnostic information not being utilized by using the SD-2 in standalone mode. As I said earlier, compare engine parameters LH to RH. I cannot recall the control button, but the SD will tell you what the normal values are supposed to be.

How exactly does this work, i see this lump of steel bolted to the end of the cam and the belt sprocket bolted to it , ( from the parts diagram) but how is this adjusting the valve timing. Not being a 360 expert

just wondering my problem is with the engine backfiring via the air intake on hard throttle in neutral, the sd2 has the p1531 code and also shows that the knock sensor in active (on) when i am having the backfire problem, i can see that timing is being pulled out when i initially rev it (down low) and then is added back in after 3000rpm or so and the know sensor turn off, from what i read the varistor solinoide is activated at about 2920rpm so is the varistor solenoid doing anything prior to 2920rpm?

i am thinking that the varistor solinoide is not operating corectly causing the engine to not run perfect so the knock sensors pull timing out causing the car to backfire through the air intake.

    what do you think?
