I am tired of paying $100 for someone to evac my refrigerant every time I take an engine out. I want to be able to do that myself. What do I need to service my AC? R12 or R134?

If the system is empty of refrigerant already, just a vacuum pump and gauge set is required.

To properly reclaim refrigerant requires a reclaimer. A fairly expensive unit.

First you will need to be epa 609 certified. Not difficult and it can be done on line. Next you will need the appropriate hoses and pressure bottles to accept the freon from the AC unit. Usually this is not reused unless you can dry it. Next, you need a vacuum pump to evacuate the system after you get it together and check for leaks. If it's ok, then you can put in the correct freon.

That is just an overview. If you get on line, the epa 609 training explains all that you need to do. Any deliberate release of the freon to the atmosphere is a crime. Release to the atmosphere from what's in hoses and that amount releases by taking hoses on and off is not a problem.

Also, you will need the epa 609 certification to buy R12 legally.

The question pertains to 328, 348, 355 when the engine has to come out.
