What do lambo people think of the 458?

Doesn't do much for me. I'm very slowly beginning to like it...but personally, I don't like a flappy paddle gearbox with the exception of a car that's a dedicated track car, which you can take on the road, (scuderia, Challenge Stradale, Enzo), where I find it acceptable.

That's not my only gripe with it though...I personally find the front end hideous, the back is a little tacky...I could like it in black or dark grey I suppose. I'd rather wait for the 'scuderia' version.

If I had the cash right now to buy either a 458 or it's lamborghini equivalent...It'd easily be the LP570 (with a manual, I might add!).

Of course, I'd still rather have an LP640/670 but they're more expensive and can't really compare the two.

 

I like the 458 but "flappy paddles" are a deal breaker.

 

I am pretty much the same on everything you said except the flappy paddles. I like both trannys but in regards to the looks of the 458, I just think the thing is hideous. Maybe it looks better in person. I know the enzo was a car that pictures did NO justice for but even that i liked in the pictures. The 458 is a heinous looking car.

 

Going to see the local "unveiling" of the 458 tomorrow night. I will let you know what I think then. Will take some photos.

 

Haven't driven one but have seen a 458 in person and its much more impressive up close/in detail.
Magazine pics don't do it justice. I don't think the design screams 'its a ferrari', but it is well executed regardless

On the other hand I am not as impressed with the recent Gallardo and Murci designs. The last couple years or so, the cars seem to have more detail added just to keep the design fresh, and the proliferation of sub-models (sv, sl, trofeo) may be great performance wise, but to the unitiated looks like stickers-wheels-flared bumpers tacked on. I prefer clean, simple lines. But that's just my opinion...

What numbers are you using to compare 458-Murci?

 

My opinnion is that shutting out 6-speed manua gearbox is huge mistake.
4 back lights would have been nice also, and four pipes. But world is changing......

the Murcielago has been around for almost 10 years ...
whereas the 458 is a brand new item

Well...looks re decieving as are the so "called" posted performance numbers..

Lets start with the looks

I dont care for the cheap round LED rear taillights, nor the cheap LED front wing lights looking like battle ship galatica...yes the LP and Gallardo of LED lights as well..but thet are formed in a more tasteful manner on of size that fits with the design of the car.

Next, go drive one...well you probably cant because the F Dealer will only show it to you and not let you drive it till you buy it..

But I did drive one in Cali a few weeks back for about 25 miles..
bouncy, nosey, and the lag for power from acceleration application was very noticeable...I will keep with the L car drive by wire for instant response. All in all, just a tad more refined than a re-worked 430 Scud..IMO.

I like the 458 myself. Saw it in person a couple of weeks ago and the sales rep showed me around the car. Pictures do not do the car justice. The front end took a little getting used to but grew on me quickly. The back end and sides leading into it are nicely designed. The interior is nice but still short of the amenities found inside a Lambo. All in all, a very nice improvement over the F430.

As far as how it compares to a LP640, apples and oranges. The LP640, as mentioned, is "old" technology. The LP560-4 is the Italia's direct competition. I can not speak for the Italia but if it is as quick as the LP560-4 it will outrun a Murci (with the notable exception of the LP670SV--you'll need the likes of a veyron to outrun one of these) well into the triple digit speeds. The LP560-4 is a very quick car but the Murci is vintage Lambo with it doors, V12, etc. Depends on what you want. Very lightly used LP640s (09's) can be had for around the same price of an Italia or for less depending on the Ferrari Dealer's mood. That said I like both cars for different reasons. At the end of the day, give me the LP570-4SL.

 

If the stats are correct you get a ton of performance for that low price . Kinda has an enzo look to me in pics a lil . I dont know how it looks in person or how it drives but on paper its a winner hands down . But it would take a hell of a car to get me away from Lamborghinis . I would take a 07/08 LP , PUT INTAKE + EXHAUST AND YOU WILL GET A BETTER LOOKING CAR TO ME WITH MORE PERFORMANCE AND A LOOK THAT IS JUST ALL BY ITSELF . PLUS THE PRICES SHOULD BE CLOSE IF THE lp ISNT EVEN CHEAPER . mY .02 . I WOULD TAKE A WORKED 07/08 LP OVER THAT CAR IMO ..........

 

As much as I would like to get excited about the 458, I'm saving that excitement for the Scuderia version.

That being said, I think the 458 is a cool car, def not the prettiest car but capable on track. Of course, I want and would rather have an LP670 SV in jet black

I commend Ferrari for finally stepping out of their comfort zone and experimenting with some new design cues but the Italia still looks like a rough draft.

 

I did drive one in Belgium in April on a sunny day with one of our Belgian dealer expecting me to come back to F... He came to me and allowed me to ride it for about 50 kilometers !

I agree with Roy's comments and will add that I've no thrill to ride it or to smash throttle without a huge push in my back because it's too linear engine without emotions.

I was at the invitation only unveiling of the 458 at my Fpimp Central Florida Ferrari.

I like the car....more curves...very Ferrarisque. It's sleeker that the 430/360 which look like bloated cows. The thing is that it's still a big car. I wouldn't take one over a Diablo ever.

....it needs four tail lights and four exhausts.

I really HATE the fact it's paddle shift only. A Ferrari without a gated shift with a slender chrome shifter....blasphomy !

Well, I went to the "unveiling" of the 458 Italia last night at the Penske Racing Museum, here in Scottsdale. I kind of liked the car, but it seemed like there were too many "contrived" design details on the car..........it just didn't "flow". Not bad though compared to the 360/430 designs. It gets back to the low/racey/swoopy look, that I like...........but, It ain't no Lambo!!!!!!!!!!

Looks good, driving experience is fantastic (shifts fast and barely noticeable), Ferrari exhaust note, gauges are excellent (for the driver, passenger can't see much but who cares), performance is on par with modern exotics. Price is great. Nice job on the weight (as a comparison, 500+ pounds lighter than the 670-4 SV).

They really did a nice job on the car.

One would hope so, considering its the most modern exotic on the market right now.

Not a fair comparison, one is a V12 hypercar with the dimensions of a small ship, the other is a nimble V8 go kart.

They're both Italian and have an engine behind the driver...the similarities end there, no offense.

 

Actually I agree. I was a Ferrari of Washington's invitation only event. The lines of the car are great but the details are just plain goofy IMHO -- like those serpent looking headlights. Just based upon looks, I will stick with Lamborghini. Driving the 458 might leave me with a whole new attitude.

 

The SV is 7 inches (about 4%) longer and 5 inches (about 6%) wider than the 458 but about 500 pounds heavier. The 458 is slower than the SV 0-60 but faster 0-100 with just a 4.5L engine. 458 top end is over 200, not as fast as the SV, but within 10 mph or so (closer if the SV has the big wing). The 458 should beat a SV around a normal track due to its lighter weight but would lose on a top speed track.

The biggest difference between the two cars is looks and the 458 doesn't look bad. They did a nice job on it. And the gauges look great. The warm up sequence is really well done.

Lambo needs to start shedding some pounds (like 500), otherwise, what's next? 8.0L? And this is from someone who loves Lambos and drives one regularly, everywhere.

Another nice new car is the McLaren MP4-12C. It is spec'd lighter than the 458, with more HP and is projected to be around the same price as the 458. And is the new Lambo going to be out before it comes out?

Lambo has had essentially the same two models for getting close to 10 years now. I love them but they really need to step up to the plate here given the competition.
