430 What do the up/down arrows mean in the F1 display

I noticed sometimes the F1 indicator has an up arrow and sometimes a down arrow on my 2009 F430.

What do they mean?

“Recommended shift points”. I ignore them. Largely there I believe for fuel economy, which to me, is comical

Thanks. I suspected that was the reason, but didn't want to assume that it meant something else.
