What do you do? How do you afford a Ferrari?

Which just goes to show you it really doesn't matter what you do for a job. Most people will follow their passions in life weather they know it or not.

Your points are good ones. I would also add that the question is very "Merican" inasmuch as careers, responsibilities, toys, addresses are very much more in the public domain here unlike most other parts of the world that seem to be able to maintain privacy without needing the laws that we have. So I think that some tend to see these questions as an intrusion associated (especially now) with the politics of envy! An envy that in some cases (maybe as much as other parts of the world too) is valid as there are clearly some o f-car owners who have ill-gotten gains to fund their ownership ona basis that has been well publicised recently. I have even heard it remarked that any CEO driving around in an f-car is clearly paid too much! Or another comment: clearly guilty of poor judgement in the context of his/her role as a CEO and shareholders should be warned. The obvious retort is that what a CEO does with his/her comp. is their own business. Nevertheless people are judgemental and the there is no accounting for the results. Just look at the way CEOs use company planes to commute to their vacation homes. The comments on this are reaching a crescendo!

 

Some people just weren't taught about things like this. I know I wasn't I'm 24 and still slip up and ask such questions. Then I think "Oh God did I just say that? Please don't answer and walk away". Most of the time you just form to society and blend in but somtimes nature comes out and you can call it rude, or a brain fart or whatever but 99% of the time people are just curious and in a "wonder mode". Don't take offence at somthing so small.

It's like women and their breasts, if you show them off be prepared for people to stare.

Besides, there are many more worse things than people showing massive interest in your car... like showing their interest with bricks at 2:00 am.

 

Are you the type of person that learns from your experience? (I assume you are young, nothing wrong with that).

You just appeared on this board. It is primarily devoted to Ferraris. If you truly want to get to know people and learn something, the first thing you might do is

LISTEN

Then, you might think about asking questions about the cars. If, in the process, you make friends here, great. There are any number of great, deep, meaningful and sick relationships that have come from people's involvement on this board. But, if you walked right up to someone in a party of strangers and said, 'Gee, really nice expensive wristwatch you're sporting there, Dude. What do you do for a living, and how did you achieve material success?" I would think the reaction would be other than warm, and genuine- unless the person is only interested in talking about their material goods.

ON the other hand, if you are here to 'network' and make friends for business purposes,I suspect there are other sites, designed for that purpose, where you'll find a warmer reception.

If you're at a social BBQ or dinner party and you're introduced to someone you haven't met before, it isn't surprising or rude to ask or be asked "so what do you do", "so where do you live", etc. You're obviously searching for some common ground or topic of further conversation, not directly asking about the person's income, after all you're supposed to be getting to know each other better in that situation.

Most of the people here are here to talk and learn about the cars, not each other, so this is different as NNO has pointed out. Even the way you asked your question, it was clear that the premise of your question was about the amounts of money people make and that is generally considered rude in Western society.

In any case, your taking a poll of "high-income" careers probably isn't very effective anyway. You will find almost every career represented here (teachers, artists, policemen, military, business owners, doctors, lawyers, etc - you would figure that out if you spent even a few weeks reading posts). The reality is that this board demonstrates that it doesn't matter what people do - if they're good at it or if they're disciplined in their finances or both, they were able to own an F-car.

Finally, remember there are 20K members and thousands of threads started every month. The obvious questions (what do you do, etc) are asked several times a month and any news item, photo or video is first posted at least twice within 60 minutes of it being published somewhere in the world. Don't expect that because it is new to you, that it is new to the board. Some things are just really, really old after a while no matter how courteous people try to be.

I inheirited a cod farm from my uncle Joe. We mash up all the unusable parts of the cod (eyes, rectrum, etc) and make spread for sandwiches. Usually it doesn't taste very good, but with the addition of a little salt, plain yogurt and some vinegar, we had a winner on our hands. I paid cash (rolls of quarters!) for my first Ferrari, a 390CS, when I was 19. After a while, I bought an island for myself and this three dollar hooker I picked up in San Jose and started my own country called Freedonia. We now have three generations of inbred children. I have a long gray beard, have stopped wearing pants and talk to coconuts like they are real people.

I was an exterminater but I was fired because my candy-ass boss wanted to make me ware a resperater. John Rob Stossel (me) don't wear things that makes him look like a sissy.

I told my boss I would not ware the resperater - CASE CLOSED. He then said I could not go on any more kills that day. He put the resperater in my truck to make me ware it. I belted him and I was fired.

Right now I am not working but I am looking for work. I am a hard worker and I don't put up with **** from no one. I made some mistakes in my passed, but I aint ashamed of anything Ive done. There are some things I may not be proud of, but I sure as hell aint ashamed!

I do not own a Ferrari - I can't afford it. But I am going to buy a Porsche with the engine in the back (a used one). I love cars and have my whole life. There are some great people on this board. Some I don't care for. But no one will have a problem with me so long they don't get in my face.

I am not a political person, and don't really believe in voting becuase it doesnt make any difference. All the politicians are the same.

May be what you do at what age isn't so important a question as how do you succeed. Anything you do at any age can get you the Ferrari if you succeed, but each one of us succeed in different ways....
