A buddy is a manufacturing whiz. He's worked for several LARGE companies being their prototype to retail product manufacturing manager... he's looking to do some work that is FUN. so what to do you need or want for your car? carbon fiber this? improved that? Something that would just look "cool"? let me know.
Some years ago it was possible to find aftermarket targa-top panels for the 328 made out of clear plexiglass. I haven't seen these available recently, but admittedly haven't gone Googling for them either. Since then Ferrari has created several newer models with targa tops (348ts, 355GTS). Also Corvette has done some nice things with various colours of tinted/clear targatops. Current technology, as in the Maybach and the Superamerica, even enables a glass top to vary its transparency from opaque to clear. Seems to me that either multi-tinted/clear tops for 308+ targa models, or even varying-transparency ones, might find a market today.
1. The carb airbox on almost all 76 - 80 308s is restrictive and we have seen this on the dyno; it would be easy to fabricate a larger volume airbox utilizing an existing commonly available high flow filter that would be worth about 10 hp. 2. Carbon fiber or cast Al intake manifolds that will fit all qv ( 3.0qv and 3.2 heads are the same) 8 cylinder Ferraris allowing either Weber dcnfs or the TWM EFI throttle bodies to upgrade from the restrictive Bosch fuel injection; could be used with above airbox; Dyno shows about a 20 - 30 hp increase 3. lightweight CF bumpers or body pieces for Mondial 3.2's
anything... in past lives he's made electronics (no IC design level stuff, but board assembly and component manu) everything from the switches, and knobs to the housing, to the industrial design of the product, to the box and packaging it ships in.... Musical instruments, of all types and all facets and components therein high end audio components... Auto restoration parts.... so he's got the knowledge base on a WIDE variety of manufacturing techniques... die stamp, inj mold, castings, extrusions, welding, metals, plastics, some composites, lots of other materials, milling, rapid protoyping... I'm not quite sure ALL of the processes he's 100% on, but the list is long. If he can get it done, he knows who can, or can find a way to do it within his knowledge base, and isnt afraid to say... "well, thats not the best way to do it, so I'd rather not." good ideas, keep 'em coming.
It would be nice to machine an adapter that allows you to fit distributor cap from a 4cyl. anything car to fit the 308 distributors. Need to design it so it fits in between the dizzy and lines up the #1 cylinder and either uses a stock rotor or one that can be adapted to the stock dizzy shaft.
I could us an adapter-plate to mount a fire extinguisher to the seat-mounting bolts w/o screwing into the pan...
high-quality, correct-in-appearance / function replacements for all 3xx ignition components. At even a fifth of the factory parts price, someone could still make good money Also, I understand that Mondial fuse boxes need a good replacement alternative (others on the forum have promised new designs, but none have heretofore come through)
A fold-up 308/328 top that can be stored without pushing the seats forward. (Preferably one that isn't "parking only" -- how's his wind tunnel experience? ) A cam position sensor that fits on the cam mouted distro. (with or without distro components). (Between the stock Marelli sensors and a cam position sensor, you can get enough information for a stick coil-on-plug ignition.) A cooling fan for the oil cooler (when stationary) that doesn't get blown overrevved at highway speeds (variable pitch or backs out of shroud). (Esoteric or what? ) A set of intake manifolds that actually fits EFI injectors without looking hacked up.
Complete carbon fiber doors for the 3x8 models - those doors are just plain heavy!! Could have a more modern Challenge Stradale type interior effect, with windup windows and bits of string for the door pulls to give that F40 feeling. If it was just a case of disconnecting and unbolting my existing door and fitting these instead as a reversible weight-loss treatment I'd buy some in a heartbeat. Also a carbon fiber rear 'tailgate'/hood and bonnet panel would be nice. Rachane - Plexiglass targa top for 3x8 is a damn good idea!! Sadly I think such parts will never see the light of day - the feeling amongst specialists is that 3x8 is yesterday's car, unf. What do folk here think? I spoke with some chaps that restore and repair Ferraris here in the UK (Moto-Technique) and they said the cost of the moulds is the biggest factor - you'd be looking at 20,000 GBP to produce what I suggested. Bigger airbox would be great, too, might fabricate one of these from aluminium myself... Cheers! Rich.
Anything that will lower the weight on Ferrari's. Esp. GTS models. Also, the light switches on the stalks for the 328 are out of production and very hard to come by. Make a thousand of those please. Meanwhile, there are several guys on this site that would like to launch products, perhaps he could get some extra business if you PM'd those who wanted to contact your friend directly......like me! Best! Wes
Will do F1, wil be talking to him today... might set up a little idea session sometime soon. Getting a feel for what people need/want. obsolete parts are a good one. tooling and set up can be $, but it can pay off in the long run.
A conversion to long life belts and tensioners/pullies that don't need changing every 5 years or 30k miles. All 328 switches are very expensive to replace when they break. I spent 600 to get a climate control switch that works AND connects in my car!
There was a guy who sold his 308 and left F-chat 1-2 years ago who developed a longer life belt system. I think they were around $1200 and no-one seemed to be interested. Someone might remeber the name or b able to find the old thread...?
It just came to me.... His name was Ed Gault and he got razzed because he got rid of the 308 and bought a newer corvette. He was very helpful in the tech section, it was a loss for F-chat.
If he has real skill, I challenge him to make a semi-lightweight seat (no more then 15 percent heavier then OEM) with active ventilation. I would love that. Hell I would even buy/give him the seat!
Not very difficult to make. Just follow Mike Charness' instructions at: http://www.tradetutor.com/raceprep/
Being the cheap SOB that I am: 1) Reasonably priced fiberglass / plastic molded Euro bumpers for 308 2) Power lift for the engine lid of 308 3) Little IC circuit that when u close the door it sounds like the air lock of a UFO (ps I want a royalty on that one) 4) Harness bar for 4/5 point seat belts 5) Cloaking Device Bill
1. Mondial Fuse/Relay Box (I'll guess that there are at least 1,000 who would really enjoy one) 2. Affordable 308 Distributor Cap
