My heat shields are loose and rattling, the mechanic says I should replace the headers and maybe look for upgraded ones without heat shields, any thoughts?

A few of us have taken the stock headers and ceramic coated them, they look great.

Todd is right on point. Ceramic coating inside and out greatly reduces heat getting out if the headers. It is my understanding that the shrouding over the headers were to keep heat in to allow exhaust to heat faster for emmision reasons and less so for reducing heat in the engine compartment, but as with most information on Ferraris this could be wrong. I did this (removal and coating) and the difference is amazing, none of the excessive heat buildup in the engine compartment.

My 76' came with just headers, no wrap. Puts out heat, but the sound is great. :)

I never thought about removing the heat shielding would change the sound of the car. I haven't driven mine yet with the shields removed so I don't know. (Heck, it's been so long since I've driven mine I couldn't probably compare anyway.)

Why would you replace the headers and not just remove the heat shields? If it is an upgrade then why not just do it to yours? Are they bad?

Not too sure it would make a noise difference, if so then pretty small I would think.

That probably is correct as Euro cars dont have the shielding.

Euro cars do have extra shielding in the engine bay though, such as the shield over the starter.

Okay, so I could probably just remove the heat (NOT hear) shields and have my headers ceramic coated? I don't THINK there's really anything wrong with the headers, just the shields.

Those are my headers in the photo, and they still look sensational. The noise did change, because (a) they were loose and rattling, and (b) I put a new muffler on! The engine bay temps seem fine too, but this all subjective.

I thought they also had 3 separate metal heat shields that mount to the standoffs on the headers?

Interesting...from the pic it appears that the left/right headers have different length tubes. Seems a rather odd design but perhaps it's done to "tune" the left/right bank to different power/rev ranges. Never heard of that being done intentionally but who knows...

Perhaps the lengths compensate for the different bends.

It is a ceramic coating. Jet Hot is the most widely known, but there are others. It is applied, baked, and then ball polished or something similar. The shop I used had black, white, silver and dark gray. I think the dark gray looks the best, but it is - of course - the most expensive. I went with the silver and mine look just like what is pictured above.
