...I'm interested in. It's a '79 GTS w/ 31K miles and the asking price is $40k. Has all the tools, books and records and just had it's 30K service performed at a Ferrari dealer. I definitely want a 308 and I've been thiinking I should hold out for a nice QV, but this one's close by and the idea of having the last of the carb models is also kind of appealing to me. It's at an authorized Ferrari dealership so how should I handle the issue of a PPI? I would like to think I could trust their own mechanics?

I also think a late Carb car is a good idea. I like the colour too, red but not too red.

    I like it!

Is it at FoCF? Good guys there, but I'd still want a PPI. Spend a couple bucks and ship it to Autosport in Jupiter.

What did they DO to the Series II Lambretta in the background? Those bikes are rarities that should either be maintained with the original paint/patina, or repainted to original specs. Seeing that flat black Jesse James/Monster Garage/hot rod paintjob and the stupid tire/wheel treatment gives me the shakes, as a classic scooter afficianado.

Front bumper looks like it has been stored outside. Is that original paint? I think that as these cars age, the carbs cars going to be easier to keep running.

Very nice example.........1979 is a little past the peak engine specification, as you always have to maintain the catalyst system.

I agree with others that's a beautiful car in excellent condition, so as a "price checK" I say , yea worth it....

At this age, no one would notice if you uprated the cams to 1976 spec, and reworked to non catalyst exhaust.......:D, in most States anyway.......

You could get an earlier speedo too, that IS pretty jarring visually, a 'circle" around '55'....yea, as if!!! LOL!

I own the exact same car in Rosso Rubino #29399 with 32,000 miles. We've had it eleven years and it has proven to very reliable and a fun car to drive. My wife and I have traveled extensively in California, still remeber a Northern trip thru the Redwoods on a beautiful late summer afternoon. Have a PPI done, a few dollars less would be good - Demeri

$40k for a non-fiberglass 308??? Wow, did prices just up $10,000 in the past month? Cars like that '79 are around $30k. Check around, QVs are around the same price. IMHO $40k is about 8k (minimum) too high. Please do not let your desires cause your brain to make a foolish fast purchase. They made many thousands of 308s, an many are for sale for much less than $40k.

With a recent service from a Ferrari dealer and in that condition I say its worth the 40k easy. The seats look fantastic like new. Just get a PPI and buy it if its the car you want.

I am amazed some people are sooo concerned about trawling ebay for months and travelling all over the country to attempt to save a few bucks on a Ferrari. It always makes sense to buy the best out there.

I agree. If that car needs nothing, than its worth the price. Im sure you could knock it down a few grand. The '79 308's have plenty of power, and have more useable low end torque.

+1 for paying a little more for a good car.

IF the car is truly as nice as it looks, and if it indeed has been properly and recently serviced, it pays off in the long run to buy the best condition one you can find.

Most of the 308s I have seen with $30k asking prices have old/worn/hard/obviously re-dyed leather, paint that looks good on camera but is showing its wear in person, spotty maintenance history, dubious mileage, etc.

If this car is as nice in real life as it looks in photos, and is a no-issues car, then it is indeed worth more than the "I bought my car on eBay and need to sort it out now" crowd.

I just bought my car in May and the previous owner did tons of work and spent more than $60K in only 3 years and only drove the car 2000 miles. Take it form me - there is nothing like a Ferrari running on carbs! The sound of the air sucking into the air baffles around you is just amazing. My car has had many modifications so I spent considerably more for it than a normal 308. It all depends on what you want to do. I only wanted to get in and turn the key and drive. Everything that could break on the car has already been fixed or upgraded and the belts and major service was just done before I bought it. The previous owner even did a full paint job that included a full strip to the bare metal (of course I have over 20 photos of the progress in the body shop to document exactly what was done). Here is a partial list of what has been done:

    1) Flared out Rear Fenders
    2) Original Ferrari 355 Brakes on the front
    3) Coil-over fully adjustable suspension - car is lowered as well
    4) Electronic Ignition (programmable with rev limiter) - No more coils to deal with (Highly Recommended)
    5) Dry sump oil system with external pump (holds about 12 liters of oil in the system) - Can take it to the track any time I want withough worrying about the oil level
    6) Running with Test pipes and no cats or pollution pump
    7) Installed a roll-bar with 5 point seat harness - (modified original seats so it doubles as a child seat for my kids)
    7) Removed the AC compressor - It only slows you down

So the moral of the story is, at least for me, the price and what you pay for something depends on what you think it is worth. I paid more for a car that came exactly how I would have built it anyways and didn't have any of the hassle of putting it all together. For me it was worth paying a little more knowing that everything is in excellent shape and that the car needed nothing. If you like the car and you think it is in great shape then just buy it and enjoy it. Although, I think that you should get an independent PPI done by somebody who knows about 308's and make sure that they provide you with a written report. I am sure that somebody can help you in the 308 forum on who to contact in your area. BTW I have included a picture for you! Good-Luck with your purchase!
