I'm curious, led on from a competition called x-prize. What do you want on it that is conceptual, and practical? there are no parameters other than it has to win the race and get 100 miles per gallon, oh and it has to go into production and i think 15,000 units per year. (Note: the tesla does not count)

    Nothing rediculous please.

Just make it simple. To make any kind of impact on the world, it has to be available to general public. So making it cheap is important, just think modern economy cars like Civic but that does 100MPG. If such car was available for around $20,000 to $30,000, they will sell every single car they make. Of course, it is easier said than done. Good luck!

Why would the Tesla not qualify? It gets infinite mpg. Seriously, if their goal is oil independence, I think electric or hydrogen cars should be eligible.

Build a car around two of these
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EEstor

100 kW-h of power, short charge time (6 minutes). At even $.20/(kW-h) you are looking at a $20 "fill up", that should take you 300 miles. An equivalent to 100 mpg when gas/diesel is pushing $7/gallon in a few months.

The capacitors would weigh about 700 pounds, build an aluminum four-seater around it with a reasonable amount of room and comfort that weighs an additional 2000 pounds, for a total weight of 2700 pounds.

The electric drive motors would have torque from zero rpm, so acceleration would be acceptable.

    I want a basic commuter.

0-60 in 9 seconds or less
at least a 100 mph top speed
    able to cruise at 85
    air conditioning
    heater
    music system
    protection from the elements
    1 or more seats
    less than $15k

If its electric it needs a 100 mile range at 85mph.

I just need something for the daily commute that will keep up with traffic and will get me to work and back. I can plug it in at night. If I have other needs I can use the other car.

I'm thinking something along the lines as the size of a MINI/Fiat 500. You see lots of people in four door car's or big SUV's that have no passenger's. It's rediculous. We need to go small, light wieght, extremely efficient through chassis, mechanicals and combustion technology.

Give me more, i need inspiration right now.

Build an accelerating, braking, cornering fuel sipping beast two people [no fat chix!] can fit in first, with ingress/egress and ragtop not dissimilar from Elise, Lexan windows with sliders for vent and visibility, then; starting with a carbon fiber cupholder, an ipod dock and fire extinguisher, put some minimal creature comforts in it.

I want an Ariel Atom, couldn't care what motor was in it.

I prefer tackling the problem of fuel efficiency by making cars, and their motors, smaller and lighter, instead of packing them with technology. So, with that aside, I want an Ariel Atom. Heck, you could put the motor from an old Honda S600 in it and I think I'd still have a blast. Which reminds me, I also want an S600 ;).

Volvo did a normal type car that got 100mpg a few years back.
The engine was ceramic. Incredible lean burn created elevated combustion temps causing the mixture to expand greatly = more HP per unit of fuel. Problem was a different set of emissions problems. High NOx. I'm sure that can be solved.

+1, but I went with the RCR Superlite Roadster. It should be here in about two weeks. Similar in design to the Atom, but you supply the engine / trans, and tires. The cost of the roller is $16k. I would bet in normal driving it will get close to 60 mpg.

I don't think it can be recharged quickly...you try waiting 10 hours before you can get going.

Sorry that isn't going to happen and the atom ideas are an indefinate 'no' as well. I'm beginning to regret posting this topic now. The object isn't necessarily performance, that is second place in this competition. Practicality and fuel effiecincy/independance are what everyone is after.
