What does a nero 348SS sound like with an x-pipe exhaust?

That's what I'm talking about!

 

Just got back from another drive this eve in the car with new gothspeed X-pipe exhaust. Man this things wails! I was going slow and found myself between 2 concrete retaining walls. What could I do, but hit the loud pedal. Whoosh! The sound on the clip is a bit understated. It's not loud at idle and lower rpms. In fact, it is quite docile, much like a beefier version of the stock single can exhaust note. But hit the gas and this thing just screams with a hint of the metal rip we were going for.

This is the final verison, I think. It is more refined than the last one. Not as gutteral. The other one was kind of a bass solo with an undersized amp. This one is more like a guitar solo that sings, but kind of overwhelms the speaker only a small bit. It has a F360CS note to it, except that it is like 1500 rpms short of topping out.

We'll keep you posted on the next symphonic sampling - tunnel music! We also have to do a speed run from a dead stop.

That exhaust sounds sick, I love the video and the shots! The first pic especially looks like two scorpions, with yours looking like the bigger, badder version that is willing to kick some serious a$$ on the OEM insect. Good work, you might have a cottage industry here. -cuneo

The new cat/exhaust combo looks lovely. The air flow path seems simplified compared to the original and the exhaust out of the muffler exits as one tube that gets split at the end (I suppose this is the X pipe bit correct?)

How much did the old and new setup weigh? Is the cat the hyperflows version or a Gothspeed version???

Hmm, let me get to the questions and I will try not to spill proprietary info so that goth will not have me killed.

1. The cats are similar to Hyperflow (300 cell metallic matrix), except they run 2.25" diameter from the header collectors straight through to the exhaust tips. The O2 sensor is mounted out of the flow path and in the front section of the cat, like the 355 stock exhaust. This is meant as a cat and muffler replacement. It makes absolutely no sense to keep the stock cats.

2. Weight is 30 lbs. with brackets, including the cats. Stock is 55 lbs. for a single can Spider/SS exhaust. We estimate the dual can stock system is about 85 lbs. but we don't have one to measure.

3. The dyno results were posted earlier - warm day (over 80), about 11 Hp gain, or about 4.5% from our stock readings. We're hoping for better on a cool day, about 61 degrees which is where we did the baseline. Remember that my car was rated at 312 Hp stock with the single can Spider muffler. We figure gains over a dual can stock system to be better.

4. The X is inside the muffler. From the cats, the pipes enter the top, mandrel bend into "U's", and are joined at the center, then exit as single pipes splitting into 4 tail pipes. Simple and effective. Goth says there's a whole lot of other stuff going on inside, but he won't tell me cuz I'd squeal to the Brotherhood like a school yard girl on a swing.

5. We'll work on additional video. It's tough work, but someone has to do it. I also need to have the car smog tested to make sure everything is CA legal. We have no reason to believe it will not pass with better numbers than my old stock system had. You will notice that my cats have 2 O2 bungs per side. That's for us to tune the engine better (ND is drooling for his maps soon my friend, very soon...), but not a normal configuration.

This system is mine and no one else has one. My 348 is the only one in the world that sounds like this. If it were up to me, none of you would have one either.

Ozzy was the brains behind this. I had mentioned your x-pipe challenge exhaust before in conversations, but the design of this muffler is ALL Ozzy. All I know is that I'll be buying a Gothspeed exhaust system for sure. So the rest of you guys are gonna have to get in line after me.

Yeah but the flow for that muffler isn't the best for our application. It is a 2 in- 2 out, but the big differences is that it is 2 in on the same end, and 2 out on the other. So the flow for that muffler is from left to right, or vis versa, and not what we need which is 2 in the top and 2 out the bottom.

 

Before I bought my Stebro, I talked to a tech at Magnaflow. He claimed that the Magnaflow X-Flow mufflers where symmetrical in design. You could use the two top inlets on opposing sides and the bottom as outlets. He claimed that this would have no degradation on performance. These mufflers are used in this sort of configuration on Camaros. At a retail price of just over $150, I see little downside. BUT......Then again, I did end up buying a Stebro.

The x-pipe is inside the silencer/muffler...... ............. As Vince has metioned, it made no sense to make his individual components interchangeable with stock or 'other' exhaust systems. The stock cats (and any other aftermarket performance 348 cat) choke down to 2.125" after the cat matrix. Vince wanted to take full advantage of the 2.25" tubing. That is why we made the cats and muffler work together, so the whole system is 2.25" minimum, from the header collector all the way through to atmosphere.

It will be less than any other hi-flow cat/muffler combo by a big margin...

As ernie said, those are made with hard corners at incorrect angles for our application, on those mufflers the respective exhaust pulses from each cylinder bank will 'crash' into each other rather than 'complement' each other.

Vinces exhaust is made entirely from scratch........ it is so much better than any off the shelf x-pipe muffler. The 'x-pipe' in Vinces muffler is a matrix of real mandrel bends...... progressively merged & diverged to allow complimentary scavenge from each cylinder bank.

The merge point (x) was also biased slightly to the right, so that each cylinder bank is equidistant from the merge. This was done for equal pulse stagger at the merge point from each bank.

This is especially good since the ferrari flat crank v-8 fires each cylinder bank alternately.
