i have seen in some ads people use the word over service in regard to their vehicle. How do you over service a car?

Too much oil for one, and the most common.

Thinking that you're adding motor oil to the engine but it's going into the transmission instead. Thus, your trans will be overserviced.

Or, checking a wet sump system while it's cold, then thinking that it's low, adding more oil. Now it's overserviced.

Changing the engine oil every 3000 miles (to satisfy those who want your money) when the owner's manual calls for less frequent intervals. That's overservicing...

You service it more than Ferrari specifies. Usually it's sales hyperbole to convey that the seller was compulsive about taking care of the car.

I have a close friend that really does obsessively over service his M3. If he ever puts it out to market the buyer will be one very lucky person!

    Buy it ;)
The prior owner of my 328 GTS way back in 97' owned it 5 years, only put 5K miles on it and took it to the Local Ferrari dealer almost every time he drove it ..... Trying to get them to service or do something to it. The service manager said, EVERYTHING is perfect on that car ....... Wish I still had it ..... Waaaaaaaa
Took it in a minimum of every year for a yearly service, and much more along the way.

Although, in the UK, I've heard "over service" to describe a car that was overdue its service, as the mileage (the most common indicator) was over/past the designated point of service.

It's another one of those instances where the United States and the United Kingdom are separated by a common language. Such as when an Englishman tables an issue he means that it should be discussed, but when an American tables an issue he means that it should be dismissed from immediate consideration.

So I guess the definition, as with many words and phrases, could depend on where you are in the English-speaking world. Depending on the location and context, I think it could mean that the car was badly serviced (e.g. incorrect fluid levels) or that service was deferred. Either way, it's not a good thing.

    All the best,
    Andrew.
