What exactly is a soft touch dash?

    I own a 2009 G37XS and it has a soft touch dash. i did a bit of dissasembling and it looks like the dash is wrapped in some sort of vinyl and under it must be the soft touch plastic, because if it was hard plastic underneath it would not have a rubbery feel when i press on the dash.

    does anybody have a car with a LEATHER wrapped dash (New Jeep Grand Cherokee, 911, Panamera, etc....) that seems to have soft touch plastic underneath?

    dumb question i know, just want a better understanding of how companies make our cars.
