    Hi all,

    2005 360 Spider

I spoke to Daniel at Ricambi earlier today and showed him the pictures I attached here of my warning/info lights cluster. He said that my only option to repair the peeling/delaminating is to replace the entire instrument cluster?!?!? As you can imagine, that brought about a big ?WTF? from me (not at Daniel, but at the idea that this issue requires a new instrument cluster).

From some of the pictures I've found in the forums here (RPM dial mods threads), it "appears" that the film/overlay on top of this cluster is just a thin black film. What I don't know is if it has any of the symbols etched into it or not??? My layperson's guess is that this film/overlay is actuality etched, because if you look where it has already peeled and where it is currently peeling, the graphics on the film/overlay look a lot sharper than the graphics below.

Anyone seen anything like this before? Any solution short of a complete instrument cluster replacement?

Any ideas, suggestions, nudges in the right direction etc... would be greatly appreciated as I'm anal retentive about maintaining my 360 in tip top shape, but at $4K+/- for a new instrument cluster, I may just have to pucker the 'ol butt cheeks on this one unless someone comes up with an alternative for me.

Your best bet is probably gonna be finding someone that has replaced their cluster and buy the part from them. I cant imagine anyone makes that part and it looks to def. be etched or something that would be quite difficult to reproduce.

I'm not too confident the black overlay is etched. It doesn't look like it in the pictures you posted (nice shots, BTW); it seems like it would add unnecessary complexity. I wonder if it's just masking those edges of the base layer via some other means.
I wonder if I can dig around and experiment with some of clusters. If I was you, I'd buy a cluster off anything from ebay and mess around with it. I'm pretty sure that with a lot of clusters, they're pretty easy to manually power up the bulbs if you're crafty.

I wonder how matte computer antiglare film might work on that part?

And I agree I don't think the film is etched.

That looks a lot like simple tinting film, perhaps polarized. I would think it immensely difficult to etch at production time. Seeing as it is already peeling how easy it is to remove all the way and hold up against a bright light - can't do anymore harm compared to its current condition.

Just ideas, that's all. Not an expert...

Maybe I missed it but is there any possible explanation how this occurred?

I'd love to know so I can do everything possible to prevent it.

    Yours,

The explanation is probably easy. Somebody used lens cleaning type solution to clean the plastics. If it been used it will peel off the protective layer. I was in habits of whipping off my reading glasses and my computer screen with that. One they I realized I need a new lenses and computer screen. Probably cost you much less if you can remove the rest carefully.

    Good luck. Sark

It had just started to minimally peel when I bought the car, and has gotten progressively worse over the last 2 years.

My guess is whoever detailed the car for the previous owner used a cleaning product that they shouldn't have.

When I have some time I may pull the cluster and try to peel the balance of it off and see how it is constructed (just a film, etched or...???).

I've also put an email into Franchorchamps of America a few days ago and am waiting to hear back from them.

    Thanks all.
