    Hey guys.

This is my favorite video of my favorite Ferrari. I'm dying to know what kind of exhaust is on this particular car so I will know what to put on mine if I ever get one!

    http://www.supercarfreak.net/Ferrari F40.wmv

Seems this video is taken in Europe so I'm assuming this is a euro-spec car.

Is it a Tubi or stock or something else?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure but it sounds like a FUCHS-exhaust. It is a German manufacturer of special exhausts.

Thanks for the replies. It would be a ton easier with some pics of the engine bay.

I wonder if stock euro-spec cars sound different than stock US-spec cars, due to emission requirements and cats (or the lack thereof) ?

If you think that is beautiful you should hear tubi with no cats.

The exhaust tips are oval, so it's either the either stock exhaust or a Tubi sport exhaust. There are clearly no cats on the car from the sound. It sounds a lot like my car, so I'm gonna go with Tubi sport exhaust with no cats (my setup).

The "complete" exhaust setup consists of two main parts:

    1) Pipes (x2) that connect directly to the turbos to take exhaust away from the engine

    2) Exhaust system with three pipes (one for the left bank, one for the right, and a wastegate dump tube in the middle)

Part #1 can either be two catalytic converters, muffled bypass tubes (which I currently have), or non-muffled (also called "straight") bypass tubes. AFAIK, The US versions came stock with cats. The Euro versions do not.

Part #2 has three connections: one for the left bank cat or bypass tube, one for the right, and one that flows from the wastegate. What happens from that point depends on the type of exhaust system selected (Part #2 above) installed.

The stock US system has a large canister muffler and has the left and right exhaust tips in an oval shape (as shown in the video). The wastegate tube is round. The first picture below is the stock US exhaust.

I'm not certain what the stock Euro system looks like, but I believe it is also muffled, just not quite to the extent the US version is. The second photo below is one company's aftermarket version of the stock exhaust, and I'm guessing the euro exhaust is probably similar (just not as shiny).

The Tubi Sport exhaust also has the oval exhaust tips and round wastegate tube, but has three separate smaller mufflers, as shown in photo #3.

Straight pipes (often called "LM Exhaust") have no mufflers. Photos #4 and #5 are the Tubi and X-Ost versions of the LM exhaust.

You can pretty much run any of the exhaust systems with or without cats (with some restrictions based on the manufacturer). You can mix and match for the power, sound, and flame-throwing distance you wish to achieve. :)

    Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to write out that fantastic, extremely informative post. The pics help a lot also.

    I have 2 questions:

Who manufactures the muffled bypass tubes?

I noticed most of the muffler systems have 3 flanges offset in a triangle shape, so in order to use the straight pipes in pic #4 (flanges are in a row)you would have to change part #1 on the car, I take it those would be F40LM parts?

    thanks.

I know Tubi used to make muffled bypass tubes for the F40, but I don't see them advertised on their site any more. I know for a fact they no longer make the unmuffled bypass tubes, as I was unable to order any from them.

The difference in how the flanged ends line up is cat vs. non-cat cars. The cat-equipped cars have the wastegate dump tube drop down (presumably to get out of the way of the cats) and the non-cat cars just send everything straight back. Tubi (and others) make versions of all their exhausts for both setups. Following is a photo of Tubi's LM exhaust for cars that have (or at least originally HAD) cats installed.

And as an addition to my original post, there is also the option of "Sport Cats" which have a larger honeycomb catalyst for higher flow without going catless. So the four options for pre-exhaust are: cats, sport cats, muffled bypass tubes, and unmuffled bypass tubes. Again, it all depends on how loud, fast, and obnoxious you want to be. Personally, I like to peg the meter on all three of those adjectives when driving an F40. :)

Does anyone know of a stock F40 exhaust for sale ? If I ever decide to put mine in a concours event, I would lose points for my LM exhaust....

Thanks in advance for any leads,

    Jas
