I never saw it either but it sounds like some sort of dragster, in fact maybe not as dragsters do a heck of a lot more than 60 and in less than a second.

    Is it road legal?

Road legal, Vauxhall Victor, some huge V8 (9.3 IIRC) with 2 turbos and nitrous. Standing quarter mile in 7.8 sec (apparently McLaren F1 is 11.1)
    Called Red Victor 1.

All the above is IIRC - it's a couple hours since 5th gear was on and its been a long day!

I did end up watching it late last night, basically its an out and out drag car BUT its road legal, I thought it was awesome, I would love to have something like that

O-60 in a second sounds realistic with that sort of power, 7000 bhp top fuel dragsters hit 100mph in about 0.8 sec,in under 60 feet !
With the 1/4 mile completed in less than 4.5 seconds at around 330mph.

That is amazingly quick, even the fastest highly tuned jap cars can only manage 10 seconds if they are lucky

There are a few of these around, saw a moggie van with a viper V10 plus nitro, plus other bits.

Has to be road legal for the class of drag racing, but its a bit of a con...

Do you think the guy with the victor actually uses it on the road, I think he said he like to strip the engine each time its used, so whilst its technically a road car, its not really.

And its the fastest car on the road, till it gets to a corner, then it isnt anymore :)

I know what you are saying, but if its driven sensibly then a rebuild isn't neccessary, they just do it to eliminate problems after each rounds, the quickest highly modified road cars are around 8.5-9 secs (i.e. monstrous V8 engined nitrous moggies etc...)

Wish I had a picture but I once worked on a job running the 0-60 sprint at an event at Silverstone. Loads of quick "normalish" cars, usual Japanese stuff, couple of Dodge Vipers, worryingly a 360 F1 with plastic bags over the seats and a guy in overalls driving it (wonder whose service that was!) and a lot of others including an old brown (painted) and brown (rusty) Metro with dirty brown cloth seats and an OAP driving which didnt actually hit 60mph :D

Anyway, main two contenders for victory was a shiney blue Impreza and a white Mitsubishi Evo, both heavily modified with loads of wooshes and flames from the exhausts - they were battling over the 4.1 to 4.3 second mark.

Then this matt black Opel Nova turned up (Vauxhall Nova but Dutch version) driven by a guy looking like Benny off Crossroads for those that can remember (olive green jumper with holes in it, unshaven, bushy black hair). It was wide tracked, loads of lights and dials in the cockpit and clearly had an engine in the front AND back. I was running the start light so I turned to this chap and said the usual "OK, when the light goes out head off in your own time, we start the clock as you move". At that point they usually say OK, light goes off and away they go. Not this guy - as I turned the light off he got all nervous, started turning knobs and dials, waiting for lights to come on and say OK...must have taken about 20 seconds as the car began making these turbine speed up sounds - he looked across to me REALLY scared, I stepped back a few paces as he pushed his head back into the seat and pressed a button.

The car virtually exploded - 2.5 seconds 0 to 60, in a matt black Nova driven by a Dutch tramp, never forget that one! Wiped the smiles of the Jap brigade :D

:) Neah he was a weird one, only did 1 run and left a little later. Think it was twin engined, one engine driving the front the other driving the rear hence 4 wheel drive traction off the line and definately running a lot of Nitrous. I imagine it would only do 1 full on run before a rebuild and I think he had to drive home to Holland in it!

Ferocious thing though, was literally like a bomb going off :D

Another fun car that day was one of the Vipers, you can imagine what hairy brutes they are 0-60 and one was driven by a leggy blonde, long hair, pretty, slim etc. she eased upto the start driving gently then snaked it from lock to lock all the way up the couse. Not quick but impressive nonetheless and not expected by anyone. Think it was bright yellow with green shelby stripes (the car).

I don't know if you've seen TOTB (Ten Of The Best), where they all have to be road legal cars to compete, they do a top speed run, a 1/4 mile sprint and a slalom type course, there was an awesome twin engine golf there, it reminded me of that when I started reading your story, its sometimes repeatd on Men & Motors from time to time
