Based on this thread and local availability I'm going with Royal Purple; is it a given I'll need to add friction modifier? Or would that come only upon a post-change drive that exhibits chatter? And how much oil does the change require/should I have on hand; I can't tell from the shop manual, the line appears cut off. Thx
What's the story on the Redline lightweight shockproof?? The few times I have heard this mentioned, it was in raves on the superiority of the stuff, and yet most seem to be using NS. I'm due for an oil change. Wondering which oil to use... Hans
No, it already has a full portion of the friction modifier included. The gearbox capacity varies by F model, but, if you have a 328, it takes a little more than 4 qts so most people buy 5 qts.
Mobil 1 has transformed every trans I've ever put it in. I'm going w/ it in my new to me 328. Is LSD additive required w/ this oil? Thanks
I used Mobil 1 in a couple of my other 328's in the past and I was very happy with it. I would say no to your question about the LSD additive because I never had any diff chatter at all with the Mobil 1. Hope that helps.
it's not in the poll list, but I use, what's imprinted in the manual and engine compartment. ( '80 308 GTB Euro carb, dry-sump ) Agip Rotra MP 80W-90. No second gear issues, no LSD chatter, and it's ridiculously cheap. Best Regards from Germany Martin
If you know exactly how much over the 4 qts is, then you can use that extra half quart (or so) as a flush when draining the case.
Why are more people not using Redline MTL? Used it on my old Porsche 944 with the transaxle as the recommended product, did make a huge shifting difference, and I recall a 328/Mondial service bulliten recommended an 80 weight oil for easier shifting? I have some MTL leftover, can I use it in my 1988 Mondial Cab safely? Redline recommended 75/90 and suggested its products can be blended for specific application, just surprised that with all the 2nd gear low temp concerns I expected to see more 80 weight soultions...
There are several threads on MTL...not sure why it is not mentioned here. The feedback has been largely positive.
Towards improving my 328's 2nd gear cold shift and based on this thread and local availability I tried Royal Purple back in March. It was a slight improvement over whatever previously existed but not the dramatic improvement some have seen. Yesterday I refilled with RedLine NS and there is a marked improvement in shifting as well as over the RP. Just one fella's experience.
I just talked to service dept at RTGT the oldest ferrari dealer in the US and they have switched to Shell lubricants from AGIP.....Im either trying Shell Spirax 75W-90 or the Royal purple. The redline worries me with the chatter people are experiancing with it. I currently have AGIP in it now with only a slghtly stiff cold second gear, but I can live with that, but chatter I dont think I can tolerate.
I just switched my gear oil for the 4th time in the last 8 months, so I imagine the inside of my transmission must be spotless! I never checked to see what was in it when I bought the car but I have switched from that to Redline 75w90NS to Royal Purple to Mobil 1 to Redline MTL. The Mobil 1 was put in by the shop when I had my clutch/shift linkage adjustment done back in June. I always liked Mobil 1 when I used it in my cars in the past but for some reason this particular gearbox just didn't like it. The shifting was generally stiff and awkward, even when fully warmed up and 2nd gear was a *****, especially during downshifts. I just swapped it out for the MTL this morning and I must say there is a marked difference. I have taken two short runs in the car and without even fully warming up the gearbox, the shifting overall is much better. There is also no chatter from the diff, although we did add a little friction modifier. So far, I'm very happy. I'll report back if I notice any changes, either good or bad, after my next extended drive.
Okay, I have now driven my car for two longer drives, and I can say that switching to Redline MTL has completely transformed my gearbox! Out of the 328's that I've had, I always felt that this one had the stiffest shifting of the bunch. The MTL has changed it so dramatically that I would venture to say the car shifts as nicely as any I've driven. I fully recommend it for anyone with a gearbox that feels stiff or reluctant. It works wonders!
I've got 5 qts of Redline MTL just waiting to be put in....(draining the old Redline 75-90 ns out)... Glad to hear you have had positive results. I didn't really have any specific problems with 75-90NS, but IIRC, one of the more experienced Ferrari techs/mechs (who is no longer here sadly... IIRC) said MTL was the only thing he used. Thanks for the info.
You are talking about Brian Crall he recommended MTL for hard shifting(non hypoid) gearboxes. Hard shifting appears to vary by car IMO. My 355ch works well with MTL or GL5 stuff, my 308s did well with their GL5 stuff, my 348 worked better with MTL, but my cars seemed to work better with Redline Products than other brands. You should do a search on this and read some of the idiotic posts arguing with Brian on this subject they are a hoot!!
Those posts as I understand it are the reason he is no longer here. IMO, he offered valuable support and info to us fellow owners and has been a great loss to the site.
