In my winter service on my '75 308GT4 I removed the two water hoses that go from the top of the heads to the water pump. They look like they might be original (!), or at least fairly old. What I can't figure out is what happened to the inside fo them. They both have little bits peeled up in one direction like something sharp had been circulating and nicking the hose. It is really hard to photograph the inside of a small black hose!! The Gates Green Stripe hose right next to these hoses has no interior damage, so I'm guessing whatever it is gone. I thought I'd ask just in case...

Apparently these two 4" hoses cost $150 from the usual suspects. I'm going to try some of those new silicone rubber hoses from Samco.

looks like blistering from either heat or age, combination of both? i saw a great 'how it's made' episode on rubber hose, they were in the gates factory. very interesting, it's all hand rolled over dies.

anywho, i upgraded to silicone hose from pegasus. decent prices and fast shipping. not all silicon hose is rated for coolant and heat, so check on any other source you may use.

You might consider installing an in-line coolant filter. Just a thought.

Also, if your 308's max pressure is 16psi or less, and max temperature is 275F or less, then for $100 these gentlemen www.newageindustries.com can make a custom FEP Fluoropolymer coolant hose that is transparent. Then you can see particles/debris circulating (and spot air bubbles to remind you to bleed the cooling system).

Becuase of the pattern I don't think it is (just) blistering. It looks like fish scales - all the little chunks are still attached at one edge and that one edge faces the same direction for all of the little chunks. I think that the attached edge is downstream, if it matters. Both of these hoses were identically scarred. A coolant filter might be a good idea. I'll do a search on this and see what comes up. I've never dealt with a coolant filter before. I wanted to do a coolant flush also, so this might be a good time for a filter.

The hose I ordered is the same stuff as from Pegasus, but fom a place closer to me in California. Hey, if I ordered from Pegasus I wouln't have paid sales tax and saved 8%. Dang! I didn't think of that! Maybe the shipping difference will make up for that.

I pulled out two cams tonight and removed three shims for replacement. I'm in deep!

Good work Brian...do you know about the belleville washers? You probably do but just want to save you from attaching the cam cap nut and washer twice and the cost of extra valve cover gaskets...ask me how I know.

I know about the washers, but why would I have to replace the gasket to swap washers?

I actually have new stainless acorn nuts and spring washers coming from MMC right now so I can ditch the crusty bits I have now. I also ordered some intake manifold nuts and some studs since they look crusty too.

he's refering to the bellville washers on the camsahft caps. they are very easy to miss as being such.
forgot to add, i'm thinking 'blistering' in the idea that maybe the rubber had enough surface tension that when an air bubble formed under heat and pressure the steam pressure area againts the surface created a small blister that poped and left the flap. i know it's an outside left feild idea, but with the way water/coolant behaves in a heated pressure inviroment it kinda of makes sense.

    my 2cents ;)

Yeah, Brian I'm talking about the cam cap nuts/washers. I had to replace the valve cover gasket because I'd put mine all together and then learned that that the washers are not "flat" (you have to look really closely) and as such there is an "up and down" . I guess I probably didn't have to replace with new gaskets but I think the rule of thumb is always replace gaskets once they've been torqued down and I didn't want to take the risk I'd have to go in there again and replace them 1500 miles down the road. Good luck...post pics.
