Towed the 308 to the BMW track day. On the way back I hit a Bald Eagle trying to pick up a road kill. I was towing the car on my trailler so avoiding was tuff, but hit him on the right front fendor of the Ferrari truck.

I turned truck and trailler around, found the blood trail, and feathers into the woods to a water filled ditch.

Called the Police, Audubon Zoo, and Fire Deaprtment. Police came out and found nothing, Fire department showed up with 4 wheelers and a small Army. The girl who found the bird was sitting in a pickup and saw it hoping in the woods. It had a broken wing. They got it, brought it out and sent it up to LSU for emergency Surgery on the wing.

It really happened. When they asked what car to look on the road when i called in, they laughed, a ford trunk towing a Ferrari. HAHA

    Here's the proof.

You know, Kelly, most people would be too concerned with their car or truck to care about the bird... i think what you did is awesome, good for you... Accidents happen, but most people don't try to do everything they can to make them right...

Nice story and great ending. The big birds of prey are so amazing up close. WE had a large red tailed hawk for two weeks once while it recuperated. most amazing eyes, talk about intensity.

Geez, I can't even believe you saw a bald eagle, let alone hit one.

I mean, there aren't too many of those in existence, right?

Nice job on helping out that bird. I know if it were me I probably would have kept on driving and then had nightmares about it. Honestly, your post has helped me to become a better person; I know now to be more considerate of wildlife.

Perhaps you should keep the bird as your pet :)

thats cool that you cared about the bird. i agree with NNO, most people would be more worried about their car than the bird.

Is it still a federal crime to kill a bald eagle?

I don't mean as an accident. I mean like by shooting it.

    Feathers.....

Even the ones that fall out from natural causes like DDT or getting old?

Yes. The way you obtain the feathers is irrelevant to the wildlife people. They mostly used that to crack down on the crappy Native-American-souvenir-sold-to-the-tourist trade.

With that less than memorable post, I hit 5,000 and join the ranks of the...well....rank.

    Kelly,
As a licensed falconer I would have to say you did good brother! What seems odd is that it would be messing with road kill, Bald Eagles are fish eaters. If the wing is not too badly damaged, the rehab folks will be able to return him to the wild. Keep in contact with the group and see how it goes. Raptors are very delicate! Good on you!
    Jim
ps. Please tell me you did not take a feather home. Unless you are a Native American or a licensed rehaber, it is VERY illegal if you get caught.

edit - sorry, old news that came out while I was typing.....
