What have you done to your Ferrari Today?

Both cylinder heads off, fortunately about 10mins each side a couple of good taps with some wood and both lifted.

 

Melted an ignition rotor!

Drove it about 5 miles down the freeway, parked on the side with only 4 cylinders; limped it to a Denny's parking lot and put it on a tow truck.

Pulled the rear cap off and wondered what all of that yellow stringy stuff was. Pulled the rotor off and figured out it was much of the plastic of which the rotor was made. That's about all I'll do to it today...

 

Finally got everything back together with front end! Recently did the following:

Sanded/ resprayed bumper with SEM #39103
Resprayed front grill
Installed MAcarbon bumper kit (waiting on new signal lenses; back ordered)
Had vents behind headlights resprayed back to Rosso Chiaro from black

Took my time since it was 103 today!

FerrParts finally got me the Thermoswitch for the cold start coolant tank. All summer she didn't have a warm-up mode. Now she's back.

 

Replaced my old worn silver OEM Nardi steering wheel with new black OEM Nardi steering wheel. It now matches my OEM black dash panel. I'm not sure why the factory would mismatch these two items. Since my 31309 is the first fuelie, I'm guessing they had some extra carb parts laying around and they wanted to use all the compatible parts they could. I'm sure that good old Italian frugality paid dividends to all Ferrari stockholders. It would make my old Nonie proud...

Any idea the cause?

 

Took my mother-in-law for a drive (she asked). Told me about the Datsun 2000 and 240z she owned. Told me I looked good in it.

Should keep the wife happy (for a little while anyway).

 

Took her for out for a spin, west towards the Rockies.

(Referring to cause of melted ignition rotor)
Current theory is that the "Marelli" cap I installed was pushing the carbon button down far too hard on the rotor generating too much heat during a high RPM rev. I'm not completely sure the cap isn't counterfeit; I bought it off Ebay some years ago for a good price, but the needle screws were mis-machined.

The center of the rotor was worn quite shiny, unlike anything I remember. I'm going to science out some spring loads and button characteristics before I put it back together.

So today I ordered one new rotor. I suspect I'd be well-advised to freshen the entire lot, but wanted to inquire about recent experiences with the replacement parts from Superformance, first.

 

I started to refresh my front spoiler on the 328... what a chore to get it off, but it needs to be repaired as there are several cracks and gashes on the bottom.... pics to follow.

 

I had trouble with caps and rotors from some sources. Then I tried Superformance - Cheers! No more troubles (knock wood).....

 

Drove it like I stole it!

Replaced my fuel filler hose. It went very well thanks the advice from fchat.

 

Got rid of my starter going 'click' on the first turn.

1) Removed driver's side rear wheel
2) Removed fender liner
3) Cleaned both multi-pronged connections just under coils (wire brush tool, electronic cleaner, 'de duster' to dry it out.)
4) Reconnected.
5) SUCCESS!

This is a great little fix folks. The starter spins faster, engine catches quicker. You'll be amazed how dirty those connectors are if you've not cleaned them before.

I hope that 'old' steering wheel will be mounted on your wall -- after all it spent 34 years in a Ferrari, mismatched or not

 

Several months ago while doing the full service to the car a neighbor and his son walked up to look at all of the Italian cars in my driveway and garage. The Dino was in lots of pieces and while the son was thrilled the father looked less impressed. A while later, they happened by again while my dentist was visiting and his Maserati Bora was sitting in the driveway. Again, the son was thrilled but with the Dino still in pieces the father was skeptical. The pair stopped by again later that week and I told the kid when I got the car back together I would let him take it for a ride...
I hadn't seen them in a couple of months until last night when the young man came by and said they had seen me driving the car... We chatted for a few minutes and I invited him to our Alfa Club F1 breakfast. He showed up at 0645 and we drove the 35 miles to the meeting After the races I tossed him the keys to the Dino and told him to take us home. He looked like one happy 17 year old for the next 40 minutes. He took three pictures and I took a few with him behind the wheel before he went home to tell his family and friends.

 

What a great thing to do.

 

Replaced the heater air valve assembly on the drivers side. Had to remove various hoses and the heater box so cleaned out all the bugs and rotted foam while in there. PITA with large hands working in that tight space.

 

Kudos. Love that kind of spirit.

Just finished changing my timing belts and bearings (6 yo), replaced my old battery (8 yo), and had my alternator rebuilt($75) one year warranty. Then about a week ago I did my friends 77 308 belts, bearings, water pump and both cam pulleys on the front bank. I'm tired.
