We Europa guys have a long list of stories of what we've found in the bowels of our cars when taking them apart. Usually in the center tunnel, we have found old cigarette packages, vintage Playboys, the obligatory mummified mouse and even tools from the factory.

My car was pretty much cleaned out over time, but when I put new carpeting in, underneath the old I found a mint condition 1972 quarter.

So you guys with vintage Ferraris, have you ever found any artifacts from when the car was new or worked on in the distant past? Bits of Italian newspapers, a lira coin or two?

i bought an old 1972 porsche from a collage teacher in jacksonville and got it home to do some work on it and found a pretty nice sized bag of pot under the seat.

i thought it was sorta funny considering the guy i got it from was this real scholary looking middle aged man.......

im glad i didnt get stoped on the way back home with it though

Nothing that interesting for me, although I did find a couple of nuts and bolts under the glue used to hold the carpet insulation down, and a 6" length of broken file.

I've also been sifting through the stuff I vacuum out, and have found a couple of nuts in there too, one which was missing from the trunk terminal block. Made my day.

My daily driver had the previous owners paperwork in the glove compartment while at the dealer, so called him up and ultimately now have all the service records from 12k on (car now has 95k miles). That worked out well. I only wish I could do that with the Ferrari.

Edit: I plan on planting a couple of 1965 quaters I have ...

I found a parking ticket receipt, dated from the 1980s under the carpets in my Euro 246GT. I kept it.
I also found a working Passport Radar detector in the deep reces of the trunk. It was old technology but it was a fun find.

I found the worst thing you could ever encounter when stripping down an old Ferrari:

Holes cut in sheet metal behind the seats, holes that had cups welded below them.

That was for the removable roll bar. Obviously the car had been flogged to bits on a track. No wonder it was a tad tired – and had a cracked block. I would have been happier to find an early Playboy, that’s for sure.

Under the carpet in my 250, I found an old Ferrari key chain dating to about 1960. There was also a credit card receipt from an original owner. After making a few phone calls I located the guy. He was the third owner of the car while a dental student in Switzerland. I met up with him a few years ago in Monterey for dinner and stories. He is now a dentist in Carmel and we get together every year in August to look at cars and have dinner.

I think I bought a car from his smoking buddy. A 1969 Olds Cutlass S containing a glass pipe, rolling papers and some roach clips.

A rats nest as big as a football behind the dash in 0717. A whole family lived there. One looked just like Monika Seleš.

In my 308 a wrumpled Detroit Tigers hat behind the passengers seat. Somebody was playing at being Magnum. Thank god there wasn't a pair of super small OP shorts as well....

Why is that so bad? And what car received that treatment? (I'm about to do the same thing to an Austin Healey BN1.)

I found an old Swiss business card under my 330's carpeting. My 330 was in Switzerland, and still bears the autobahn sticker from 2002.

I found very old hand prints in the back side of the door which must have been from a Scaglietti man. Who knows? Maybe it is Sergio's.

This is a wonderful thread, BTW.

$3.69 in change under the 308 console.

Also a Snap-On screwdriver under the platform in the luggage area. It was about 1/2 embedded in the insulation.

In my old Benz I found a pair of Giorgio Armani sunglasses under the seat. They were black, circular lenses and I liked them, but my wife didn't, so one day she threw them out in the garbage.

I bought a 1986 Testarossa and found a rolled up $100.00 bill in the visor. The mirror in the glove box was mysteriously dteached and laying in the glove box. HMMMM wonder if the former individual was a Miami Vice fan. Probably loved the bad guys and the drug trafficking scenes.

I forgot the one interesting thing in my 330. I had to remove one of the defroster outlets to work on the wipers. As I lowered the end down to the floor, a locknut that goes under the gear shift knob fell out. Obviously some mechanic had set it on the dash and it got knocked into the defroster. There was one under the knob, so now I have a spare.

Not exactly vintage, but in my 308 I found an old crdit card reciept from the first owner (I was the 3rd),the magnetic passcard to enter the hospital garage left over from the original owner (a doctor) from a hospital in Kansas City (where the car was originally owned), and a whole CB radio, intact & presumably operational, bolted to the front "firewall" behind the drivers pedals (promptly removed it).

I guess one of the previous owners thought the radio was a jukebox, because I found a quarter buried deep within it.

I also found a couple of tiny pieces of broken glass at the bottom of the driver's-side door, which gives me the impression it was broken into one time in it's life (small window on driver's-side door has a different "Saint-Gobain" logo than the rest of the windows).

while stripping down my friends 69 Alfa Duetto into a racecar, i found a roll of 100 nickels between the rear right wing and the trunkspace (ballast?). the car was a 'freebie' so the project was in the black for a brief time. not since then though.

    neat thread!

I'm the second owner of a 1973 USA version Dino and when I purchased it the passenger's seat was loose. The rear, inboard allen screw that secures the seat to the floor had backed out and seized somehow. I pulled the carpets and insulation back to find a 1972 French centime coin there, right by the center tunnel.

A few months later I phoned Li at Algar Parts dept in search of some items and as a side discussion I relayed the story to him. He mentioned that Chinetti Sr would often take delivery of USA import cars at Ferrari and personally drive them to the shipping ports in France, making a small vacation out of it. Since the Dino seats have a bit of angle to them, he conjectured that it was spare change that had dropped out of Chinetti's pants, as in quickly grabbing for change when you arrive at a toll booth enroute to a French shipping Port.

One of the nearly dozen Fiats I've bought over the years prompted an acquaintance to say, "you know, that kind of looks like a car I used to own." Well, one day I removed the rear seat and I found an old registration slip showing that, yes, indeed, he had owned the car about ten years previously!

this one is lame but i had to keep this thread going.

in high school i had a Datsun 240Z and found one of the previous owner's drivers license under the carpet. what a score, the automotive gods provided me with several years of trouble free under age drinking through high school and college! the photo looked surprisingly similar!
