Not lost, but stolen: baseball, football and hockey card collections. By the movers, of course. Had full sets for multiple years. Couldn't say what they were worth, but they were valuable. CW
My pellet gun (pistol) was stolen when we brought some stuff over from england. We weren't even moving, these guys were just taking stuff from a container into the basement. I miss that thing all the time, mainly because my parents still refuse to believe it was taken even though we found the case it was in and it was empty. I miss it because we trusted these guys and they just took it. Sucks because there was so much more expensive stuff down in the basement.
ouch. i lost some pictures during a move, i think i accidentally threw them in a trash box instead of a moving box as compared to the movers stealing them.
My dad's mom threw out his baseball card collection when he was still in his teens. I believe it was the only team he was ever furious at his mom. He had some ultra-rare and extremely valuable cards in his collection. He didn't know how valuable they would become at the time, but I believe it was close to or more than six-figures.
My Dad had almost every magazine that had a Beatles article in it and had TONS of Beatles memorobilia when the Beatles were around. His mum (my grandmother) threw it all out I put in $500 into stocks about 2 years ago, i was up to about $560 account value last summer. Not bad for a kid who didn't know anything when he started. I had also made a lot of trades for $7/ trade so i was pretty happy i was up by that much. I think they're worth about $320 now. I'm know i'm not the only one though
Very detailed inventory lists. You also will have time to claim for lost goods/valuables but once that time frame passes you're pretty much SOL if you find out other stuff is missing or Move your valuables by yourself and leave the usual stuff to the movers Ouch
I've never lost anything valuable, but I lose household things all the time, sometimes recovered, sometimes not. I recently went through a day-long search for the special extension cord to recharge the battery on my wife's electric shopping cart. I mean, I tore up everything. I found the bag it was supposed to be stored in. I emptied boxes and boxes of "stuff". I went through the trash. I checked the same places over and over and over. I was DETERMINED to find it! I drove everybody crazy. It doesn't fit anything else, so I couldn't understand why it was missing. Who would use it? Who would move it? Why wouldn't it be in plain sight? I was going insane! I couldn't enjoy my Ferrari Chat! And finally, there it was - plugged into the wall outlet on the screen porch, where I had last used it. DUH x 1000!
One way is to move yourself. As much work as it is, I sort of enjoy it. I helped friends and family move about 5 or 6 times last year.
Adolf!!!!! Well, my dad's name was Horace. Proudly served with the 442nd RCT in WWII Europe. (AMERICAN's of Japanese descent unit) Received bronze star. Dagger was in stored in a chest. Not there after the move, but no way to prove it. Oh well.
My grandmother found an old Ghurka dagger while going through my grandfather's stuff when he passed away. She worries too much and didn't want it in the house so she donated it to a local museum Sorry for the hi-jack, your story reminded me of this
Seal all of the boxes and have someone there with the hired crew at all times. Someone at each house and someone there at the unloading.
We lost a lot of our old pictures when we moved to our new house. To me, that's irreplaceable because its something that brings back the old memories.
When I was younger I was getting up from the toilet and the $20 bill I just got slipped out of my hand, and it went down with the flush Never forget.

My sincerest condolences on your lost. May you find & have a joyous reunion with mom in the hereafter.
