Very nice post you were able to get him to agree that paying 70% in tax is not good.

Socialism "a la Scandinave" only encourages mediocrity. Again I have nothing against the people of Denmark and I feel bad being critical but... Denmark is just such a mediocre country. You can't really say anything bad about it, but neither anything good. It leaves you with no memories of it whatsoever. People seem to be content with their small(ish) piece of the pie and nothing more. Nobody STRIVES. For anything. Nobody HUNGERS. People are perfectly content with their lives in a apathy induced stupor. And it is not just Denmark (the only Scandinav country I visited). America is a bit of a do or die place and it scares you Europeans. You are afraid to think and dream big and are envious of those that do (Americans). Well, that is just me ranting.

Your description of life in Denmark is remarkably similar to Orwell's "1984".
At least it seems, You guys are getting there.

I must say, I am positively surprised. This is the first time people actually responded wisely with good arguements instead of the arrogant rubbish back earlier. This has been very nice, and I enjoyed it very much. You have converted me to the capitalist inside, that I've always had, I just didn't realise that my country was preventing me from using it :)

But one thing will not change, I still hate GWB for his actions :) And that you cannot change. Hehe.

    Russiandude,
I don't think you are to talk about crappy cars :) - Russia is the bottom when it comes to cool cars :) No offense, but they are really crappy. Maybe we arent in the top, but you have to take into consideration that we have a 300% value added on all cars. That means that one car here, will buy you 3-4 cars in the US. That really narrows down the cool cars. And still, we have around 200 Ferrari's in DK. I saw a Porsche Carrera GT downtown the other day to, so we can't be that bad :)

Actually, Russian cars are crap. But there are TONS of cool cars in Moscow. Brabus's and G-wagons everywhere. So the taxes ARE high in Denmark.

Galt was one of the earlist members of this forum. He left about 1, maybe 1 1/2 years ago. Sold his ferrari, bought a corvette, and left.

As for Gore as President: we wouldn't have attack Iraq, wouldn't be in a position with a 500 billion deficit, wouldn't have 600 - 700 dead in Iraq, world pissed off at us, would have captured bin laden. We elected a group of people that aren't very smart, and we're getting the direct result of that.

I'm surprised that Art left out the ultimate Gore As President Fantasy: 9/11 would have never happened because Dick Clarke's views (the current ones, not the views that he had when he was working) would have caused Gore to spring into action and shut down AQ pronto!

Read today's report of the 9/11 commission: was preventable. Dumb people produce stupid results, sometimes tragic. Support the idiots all you want, end result: people dead, economy coming back (for the last 2 years, maybe the next 2 years), deficit of 500 billion, and yet you keep pimping for them. So be it. These guys (and girls) have been a disaster on any absolute standard. Argue all you want, the're gone in November. He's not going to be able to fix Iraq and the people are finally getting it. New polls show him 43 to 50 against Kerry, and its going to get worse, before the election. The other shoe hasn't fallen: rising interest rates which are going to kill the housing market, question is before or after the election?

His speech last night reminded me of Lyndon Johnson in 1967. A light at the end of the tunnel: NOT. Same thing here. Last but not least: we're still screwing around with Chavez in Latin America. What will we do if he cuts our oil supplies, as he's threatened to do? That's your next little problem, but most of the conservatives aren't even looking there (check out today's SF Chronicle for that little story).

Babble on, the clock is ticking, and this guy and his crew are gone.

Yes, we have seen how Kerry might have acted to prevent 9/11, based on his inaction to the May 6, 2001 letter to him from a former FAA special agent warning him about the security lapses at Logan Airport (9/11 highjacker departure point) based on a trial where, in 9 out of 10 instances, people succeeded in boarding planes with weapons.

The agent's letter said in part:

"With the concept of jihad, do you think it would be difficult for a determined terrorist to get on a plane and destroy himself and all other passengers?" he warned. "Think what the result would be of a coordinated attack which took down several domestic flights on the same day. With our current screening, this is more than possible. It is almost likely." The toll from such an attack would be economic, as well as human, he predicted with chilling accuracy.

What did Kerry do? In July, two months later, he replied that he had passed the letter on to the DOT, which the agent warned him would not do anything. Kerry passed the buck.

This has been reported and confirmed widely. One recounting can be viewed at

    http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/20808.htm

Kerry's record on weak defense, economy crippling spending and tax increase proposals and a 19 year voting record that is more liberal than Ted Kennedy's will sink him fast.

Yep, Kerry is the man that we want all right!

The only poll that matters is in November.

I believe that there's a saying in your profession: "When the facts are against you, attack the opponent".

    I'll not take that personally.

That's percisely what I'm saying Bush, et al is doing with their campaign and its because the facts suck. The actual lawyer's quote is:

If you have a good case, beat on the facts, if you have good law, beat on the law, if you don't have either, beat on the table.

A lawyer friend of mine, when asked why He voted democrat, even though was highly succesful ,well educated and extremely bright, answered:"They ,(democrats) are a bunch of phonies, lying through their teeth thieves, but the put bread on my table and my Family is more important to me then the Country"
So, Art I understand your position but please, you are making yourself look like a fool lately.

It's in the eyes of beholder. Someone could easily look at Bush, et al's behavior and see fraud, murder, etc. In fact, it could easily appear that he has effectively destroyed the American economy, given the huge deficit, and this ongoing war. Again, just because you hold different views of what is occuring, you need to take a long hard look at the other side, we're not all stupid, venial, or otherwise defective. We may even have a point or two.

After seeing your discourse, I have come to the conclusion that your debating style consists of 4, and only 4, types of responses to any type of position or supporting argument that is in opposition to your beliefs:

    1. Wild, unsupported allegations, along the lines of "looking at Bush et al and seeing murder, fraud" that are so beyond any rational viewpoint as to be ludicrous, or rampant speculation about how things are okay now, but they might get worse, and therefore that is the reason to vote out Bush. Neither of these tactics bestow any credibility on your arguments. I imagine that as a lawyer, you at some point were taught the futility of debating hypothetical issues.

    2. Wholly made up "facts", such as Bush has destroyed the economy, when we have just had the largest quarterly GDP growth in more than 20 years, interest rates are at the lowest levels in 40 years, inflation is at the lowest level in 40 years, unemployment is approaching the economist's definition of full employment, personal income levels are higher than ever, the stock market is recovering from the Clinton era dotbomb and was up 25% last year and on an on. Have you ever provided the support that our economy is in the tank? No, you haven't, because there isn't any. The objective economic evidence is coming in day after day that it isn't, and it sure doesn't feel that way to me. (Hint: a deficit in and of itself does not define whether or not the economy is healthy, ask an economist.).

    3. You accuse the other party of babbling, lying, being stupid etc.with ad hominem attacks that are the last resort of one whose debating foundation is built on quicksand

    and lastly,

    4. You ignore the question entirely (e.g. never did answer how the dems would reduce dependence on foreign oil or explain exactly what laws and surveillance techniques should be employed to monitor citizens and aliens to prevent further terrorist attacks) and completely change the subject with yet another topic from category 1 or 2.

Throughout all of this, your one emotion that is abundantly clear is that you are seething with an intense personal hatred of President Bush and this hatred and desire to throw him out of office has blinded you to the reality of the current world we live in and to the qualities, or lack thereof, of his likely opponent.

I notice that you never say anything positive about Kerry, other than he is leading in some polls, which leads me to think that you are only too well aware of his substantial weaknesses and liabilities. In your mind however, it doesn't matter, the Democrats could put up anyone, no matter their qualifications, and that would still be better than Bush. You are almost apopletic in your anger that he is in office and are obsessed with changing that, so much so that you are prepared to fabricate problems that aren't there, or speculate on the most negative outcome for the future that you can imagine, as if that speculation somehow has become the present reality.

It really isn't enjoyable debating with someone who strays so far from factual, supportable and objective information. I can appreciate that you have a different philosophy about how economies should function and the role of government, and I love rational discourse as much as anyone, but you've taken such an irrational approach that it undermines whatever valid points the Democrats may have.

Art: I think Ricky's question about "John Galt" was the rhetorical one, from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged," not a reference to a past member of this board.

NB. "Atlas Shrugged" for those of you who managed to get thru hi-school or college without reading it, was based on Rand's premise that the pursuit of self-interest through excellence was the highest, and most honest, calling in life. Her characters in that novel were either brilliant, elite workaholics who threatened to withdraw from an increasingly politicized, semi-socialist society, or scum-sucking democrats, looking for a fast handout while preaching mediocrity and claiming victimhood at the hands of the rich.
