They'd have needed to make a wider tub for him. No way he'd have fit in a modern F1 car. If I remember Paul Tracy tested a Benetton in the early 90's and Michael Schumacher had a huge laugh when he tried to get his tubby self into the cockpit. And PT was'nt fat at any point in his career.
I was remembering his technique of coming up behind another driver just before a turn and drafting very close. Then he would drop back quickly breaking the draft and causing the rear of the other car to lift slightly and lose traction and kick out to the right. If need be he would then gently tap the rear of the other car to help it around if he needed to get by. It was a trademark move to break the draft and lighten the rear of the other cars. He was the master of it. I think his personna would intimidate some of the new drivers to actually slow down when he would come up from behind and bear down on them. I wonder how many of todays F1 drivers would be watching their rearview mirrors more closely if he were alive, in his prime and driving an F1 car.
Much better than Jr.--I was at that race, and it was brutal out, too. That was the first time I had seen actual sleet in Daytona. Watched the first few hours, came back around midnight for a couple more, and watched the final few hours on TV in front of the fire place. I'll never forget the pit walk before the start. We walked through towards the infield. I came within a hair of getting run over by a golf cart, and when I looked it was the two Dales. I snapped a quick picture--I'll have to look for it.
