    On my '85, that area was painted with the same heat-reflective silver lacquer you see in a few other places in the engine bay. When I installed a smaller Euro-style rear bumper, I noticed you could see that silver around the edges, and I didn't care for that, so I painted that whole recessed area mat black (I used high-temp engine paint, since it's right over the exhaust system, but in retrospect, it doesn't get that hot there, so that was probably unnecessary.)

    Thank you - I thought the silver might be the same paint used on the fuel tanks.

    Richard's GTSi rear bumper/red paint behind the bumper is clean and visually perfect. I know my GTSi with the USA rear valence diaper is a different look.
