I was looking at various supercars and found some Ferraris with 20k+ miles on them. If I were to get one, I'd probably drive it numerous times a week. Just curious... what is considered high mileage for one of these cars?

    Good answer Darth

After giggling a while I have no better answer. To some its anything over 100 miles, to others its 2k per year, and to yet others its 30K. That is the Ferrari scale. Its amazing how many Ferrari's are for sale with 29K on the clock. Does it really matter?

Then there's my 2006 Audi A3 with 180,000. Purchased new in May 07, rode hard and put away wet. Mechanic got pissed because I waited to do the dreaded cam belt till 175K. Love to see a Ferrari thread with that headline.

When the engine leaks oil. Or is in need of a timing belt. Or shocks & springs need replaced. If oil only leaks but is not burned- not so bad.

I would be more concerned with the maintenance history than the mileage....
Ferraris were made to be driven, not parked.

I'd say 180K would be high mileage. You'd be looking at refreshing the engine at that point, but if it's been well maintained everything else should be in good shape.

When my TR reached 155K miles it's chassis rusted out from exposure to road salt and the Cross Bronx Expressway.

    Gentler conditions? 200K

I do not consider my 95 F355B with 57K miles on it over the hill in any metric.

It is NOT the miles, it is how it was treated durring those miles.

It depends on whether you mean from a mechanical perspective or market perception. The latter influences values far more. It also depends on which model.

From a market perception perspective, there are many low mileage modern Ferraris sitting under car covers in garages, so someone looking for the run of the mill red/tan F430 would probably want <10K miles. OTOH, someone after a yellow 246 GTS with chairs/flares would probably be very happy to find one with 70K original miles and good compression.

From a mechanical perspective, we know that 328s/Mondial 3.2s can do well over 100K miles. The later cars all have their mechanical Achilles' Heels, but through generous infusions of money should also turn six figures on the odometer prior to being scrapped. The vintage cars seem to need more frequent rebuilds -- for all their charm, they don't seem to have been built to the levels of precision of the '80s-onward cars (to generalize).

    Jim,

Just curious... did you fix it up and keep it, or not? Or, did you keep it and not repair it?

It was my daily. I went on vacation and told Sal to do a service. He put it on the lift and the chassis was so rotted that it flexed. When I came back I called him and said I'd be by to pick it up. He told me it was too dangerous to fix and that he'd sold it so that I wouldn't try to have him fix it.
