I'm looking at ways in which I can install a harness bar. Searching threads, I've come across a post referring to half a roll cage that can be installed. What constitutes half a roll cage in the diagram below? Is it the back part number #4? Would it still be safe to use a 4 point harness? Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have the rear section #4 installed in my car. I use a 4 point harness for street driving. I have a 6 point harness for the track. My harness is hooked to eye hooks mounted on the rear fire wall and to the floor. You could weld a harness bar across the rear of the rear roll bar. Do you have an old challenge cage/bar or are looking to custom make one?
Thanks Goth Not sure what to do yet. I need the rear shelf as I store the Camera tripod there so don't want to have weye bolts there.
Yep, should have some new footage soon. Got 2 Ferrari trackdays and a few sporst car meets coming up. Plus the 348 documentary I've been trying to organise. The tripod fits perfectly behind the seats on the rear shelf. The engien cover is pefect for placing a camera for backward shots and I acn get my semi-pro camera and accesories in the front boot.
The oe cage sucks. I would just build one. The oe cage doesn't even have a harness bar. You could weld one in or use plates welded to the firewall. I have a firewall plate if you need. 1/2 cage is the rollover section then you have no side protection but the oe cage has no door bars anyway so no benefit there. The oe cage is really a "fashion" cage. I'm not even sure if it is made out of DOM tube. I could never get a straight answer out of OMP the oe ferrari cage contractor. I say if a maker does not beat his chest that he used DOM or chromoly he for sure went cheap with ERW tube. I would not use ERW in my minibike and SCCA/NASA won't allow it either so if you think I'm nuts they surely are not nuts.
here is one of the firewall plates I wrote about. You can make one pretty easy if you go that route and weld it in this location because the car metal is thickest here. I actually made this one and used it then cut it back out when I ditched the challenge cage for a real one with a proper harness bar. For road car/track day car you don't have to go as radical as FBB (no disrespect intended). The eye hooks don't disrupt the engine cover. You might have to take the cover off to weld a plate. But you can see mine still looks stock. I would agree with FBB. Get someone to weld a custom cage. It would be stronger and probable cheaper. If you are just looking for something to hook the harness to go with the eye hooks. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I agree with Dr.T if you make a custom cage rear with a harness bar then you will only need to cut the interior as shown in Dr.T's picture of the rear hoop stays. You will not need to do a plate with eyes coming through the map pocket fascia. You can also better control the height of the harness bar for HANS use
