Ask the Scuderia Rampage kids... not that I would know! But I've heard that Darf diggity's observation is right on. 175+ feels so slow you can take one hand off to take a picture with it! :D

I did 220km/h, on a public road where i had clear visibility and could see nothing coming. Not an Fcar, but it felt really stable and easy to drive, no wind noise either. Slowing down was a different story.. it was scary as it made me realise just how fast i was going, when i hit about 150, it felt slow in comparison.

there is an excellent book on this sort of topic: American autobahn by Mark rask. The autobahn actually is as are american freeways safer speed=safety hehe

Nevada is an excellent place for driving fast..except when the wind kicks up..and the roads are a bit rough.

Having done an indicated 180+ (176mph laser verified) as a passenger in a modified 911, I have to say that the stability was the thing that suprised me most. I was expecting quite a hair-raising ride when I got strapped in but it was suprisingly normal considering the speeds. However it was on a wide airfield so not many indicators of the speed like other cars or trees around!

239 MPH in a turbo air-cooled flat-6, confirmed by GPS. Vehicle was stable, easily controllable, felt like 100 MPH, though sensitive to winds.

    It was also an airplane...

On the ground, the best I can claim is about 140MPH. :)

I have been and hovered around the 200 MPH many times, and the thing that comes to mind, is between 170-200 everything for a second changes to what looks like a worm hole, or warp.

I always find at 180ish that everything looks and seems to move slower then it is.

But that could just be me.

I used to race motorcycles, and I got comfy at higher speeds, and the more you drive at them, the more adapt your "skillz" become at dealing with all the data coming at you.

Never do or think about doing these speeds on streets.. only on a track.

140dB exhaust on a Honda?

I've never been much past 100 I'm afraid, as passenger or driver. The last time I did it as a driver I got caught.

The feeling is the same like when you drive 90mph and oncoming traffic is moving at 90mph too, the way whose cars are seen is the same way stationary objects seen at 175mph.

GPS verified 174 on a CBR929. I've gotten decent speed on various tracks in a few different cars, but never thought to pay attention to what speeds I was hitting. Same thing with bikes, probably got over 160 a few times, but wasn't about to take my eyes off the road/track.

matter of fact i looked down when it was 160+ and had no idea i was that fast, felt like 120. since it was already 160 i stayed on it and hit 180+.

Here is some in-car video from a Texas open road race. I was limited by the rules to a max speed of 168mph. There was a Testa Rossa there (the only Ferrari, I believe.)

http://www.larsonweb.com/car/BigBend.rm (real player format. Right click and "save as.")

Lots of air noise and engine noise above 150mph. The fastest I've driven is a little under 190mph. It was surprisingly normal. I was going in a straight line, however. I'm not sure I would like having to turn too much at those speeds.

at that speed, my worst fear is losing control. if you've ever seen video of people piloting cars at speeds in excess of 200mph it looks like they're holding onto the steering wheel for their life...literally.

wonder what the car would do if you let go of the steering wheel at 205?

it's insanely loud. people tell me they can hear me driving several blocks away. what puts a grin on my face is the sound it makes when i push the gas after releasing it for a few seconds.. BANG

overall i like the sound. i've had people tell me it actually sounds like a race car and not like a 2L honda.

I did 275 km/h (171 mph) on my Skyline GTR before I ran out of road. The GTR was rock steady with very little movement on the steering wheel. I took my brother 996 GT2 up to around 250 km/h and it was rock steady as well.

I did 250 and a bit on the 3rd gen RX-7, and it wasn't nice...he he. The car wondered all over the place.

In my CS, I haven't gone above 240 yet. I now see no point of going that fast...the CS is nimble and the handling is great. So, I enjoy the twisty bit than the long straight nowaday.

I am starting to think it will go straight!

Not to sound cute, but here's why I say that.

All of the motorcycle drivers here know about the gyroscopic force of the wheels, the faster you go the harder it is to turn. In fact going faster keeps the bike straight more than going slow. I think the same phenomenon happens in cars, but because we don't go those speeds often we aren't sure so we hang on for our lives.

I recall my early days of snowmobiling. When I started at the tender age of 15 I was terrified to go 60mph. Then I worked my way to "try" to hit 100mph, and the first few times I was scared of what each bump would do. After a while you understand which bumps to worry about and which ones to ignore, and that in general most of the miscellaneous forces you're feeling can be ignored. I think the same holds true of top speed runs. The experts know which heaves and gusts to ignore and which to watch out for, so I'm not sure we're all on the verge of suicide at those speeds, we only "think" we are because of our unfamiliarity of those speeds. Make sense?

Good point! My 954RR used to feel solid as a rock at "high speeds". I had plenty of people that would always say..."if you hit a bug at that speed, you are dead... or a grain of sand on the road..." It simply doesn't work that way.
