I am contemplating trading up to a 360 spider from my 355 spider. My 355 is an F1 and the 360 is a stick. At first I was only looking for F1 cars, but now I am hearing that only 10% of 360s are gated. That obviously makes them rarer, but are they more desirable than an F1 car? Will it be more valuable in the future? The 360 that I am looking at is an 04 heavily optioned with challenge grill front and rear, modular wheels, hi-fi stereo, factory race exhaust, Daytona style seats, with 19k miles. I am tempted but I'm not sure I want a gated car over an F1. What do you guys think I should do?

Despite F1's being a $10K option for the 360, it appears that there are on par with each other for current resale. I question your % numbers, I don't think they are that rare; 430's maybe. Drive the F1 and decide what you like to drive unless you have an eye for resale in your purchase decisions. My personal theory is that gated transmissions will gain increasing favor in the future. Its a combination of "fear of catastrophic failure"; thus $$$ repairs, and/or loss of some sort of driving "machismo" like real men don't use paddles. Interesting you are coming from a F1; most thread discussions seem to be generated by folks coming from a gated shifter perspective.

Joe- On the 360, three pedals were much more common than the number misquoted to you, likely by someone selling a three pedal. 30.8 % of Modenas were three pedal and 28.0% of Spiders were three pedals. All total, there were 4749 three pedal 360s built, so hardly rare. That is pretty close to the total of all Maranellos built (5147).

That being said, that is a really nice 360 Spider, with lots of desirable options. Biggest problem with the three pedals has been the shifter bushing, easily swapped for a better Hill Engineering upgrade.

Great info. I thought that 10% sounded pretty low. Thanks Taz!

10% was for the lAst year they offered a gated shifter, which was 2008 430...which I am on my wAy to pick up now :D. .... I love shifting Ferraris and is why I bought this 430... In my Porsche though I love the Paddle shifter double clutch transmission....but in my 328, shifting is King, Can't wait to get the 430.... It just Looks Right with a shifter between the seats.

OP, I think it's up to you. A car in perfect condition would be fun either way.
    My take:
It is very rewarding to manually change the gears and all the nuances those extra motions add to a simple drive. It's more like a dance to coax what you want out of the car. Not everyone is into this challenge. A series of perfect, or best you can manage for the situation, shifts is a nice mind puzzle and a great way to enjoy your toy IMO... even at sensible speed!

As the gated car has exactly the same transmission as the F1 I'm not sure as to what 'catastrophic failure" you are speaking of. Sure the position sensors can go bad and hoses have been know to fail (but can be replace with hoses other than OEM cheaply). Yes the solenoid unit is expensive to replace with an OEM unit but they can be rebuilt for a reasonable sum.
Just my opinion. The gated car has the same heat exchanger so that can be $$$ if it fails.

I tested them both and I liked them both. In the end I bought the F1 since all of my other cars are standard and because as good as I think I am, I cannot change gears as sweetly as the F1 does, and I cannot blip the throttle etc. as nicely as it does. It does most things better than I can and has never given me a single problem. The only thing I don't like about it is pulling away in first gear, which I always find a bit tricky (requires quite a bit of practice to get it right).

I'd buy a 430 manual transmission, but only because it's quite possibly the last manual transmission Ferrari will ever build -- not so for the 360 of course.

For what it's worth, my 430 is an 09 model, at least according to the title, and it's a stick.

Affirmative, F430s were still available nearly the entire time the Scuderias and 16Ms were being produced. Not everybody wanted a hairshirt Ferrari.

Just take a quick look at all the threads where the f1 gear is u/s. Go for the manuel gearbox and you will be able to enjoy every ride.
