I love Ferrari's! Just love them. I have had nine over the years and lost money on every one. It is worth losing some because of the great pleasure of the car and association with wonderful FCA club members. I had built a good realtionship with the dealer and finally was in position to buy new, when the "Great Depression of 09" hit. I had several at the time and since have lost a small fortune on cars, and other stuff too for that matter. I currently have a magnificant 2007 599GTB that has been flawless and I love with a passion. It should sell in the $250K range with a year remaining on warranty. Now for my question. Will I loose more money by keeping the 599? Should I trade down for 07 or 08 F430 and pocket some money? Should I sell or trade for a California? I don't like it as much, but it has a lot going for it. I just know that if I wait long enough my $250K will fade away to the current values of 575's. Thanks for your thoughts!

Ferrari made a lot more F430s than 599s, so trading down from a 599 to an F430 will only lose you more money in the long run. I don't think the 599 will take too much more of a hit in the next year or so; unless all hell breaks loose.

Why are you trading? Do you simply want a V8? Ferrari will undoubtedly make more Californias than 599s. If you want to play it safe, swap the 599 for a Daytona. But Ferraris are never about playing it safely.

Good call William, Woody I would not trade the 599GTB for either car you mention....

    But that's just me....

Food for thought: The 599GTB may represent a real high water mark in raw horsepower, if not performance, given the economic and ecological times.....I think the current American auto products certainly do.....

We will not pass this way again, IMO.

It's only the introduction of subsequent models that drive the flagships down..599/575/550...and maybe not so much, if they have lower total specifications.

    Bajeses Woody !

California? Nice, but I cannot for the life of me see you driving it for very long.

Keep the 599 and enjoy it for a while longer. Take it back to the airstrip this summer and lets flog that beast a bit.

OR, ditch the 'new car game' (the house always wins on that score anyway), go indie and find something like an F40. Just my 2 cents.

Id bet 599 prices fall at least 15-20% this year. Buy an F40 if you want a car that has a chance of retaining its value

599 vs. F40 is apples to oranges tho....

A 288GTO is an 'up' value call, too but not an everday driver....unless you are Ralph Lauren.

He sold his, I know....I know.....

All Im saying is there is not a new model Ferrari that isnt going to fall 15-20% in value over the next 12 months.

If someone doesnt want to take that hit they need to stick to classics

I do not understand how someone could go from a 599 to a California. "Not my cup of tea"

    I disagree with this assessment.

The 599 prices have stayed absolutely the same since a year ago and change. Asking prices from private buyers still from about $239-$269.

I don't see good sub-10K-mile 599s trading under $200K on the retail/private market for at least 3 years. Values on the V-12 cars have gone up in the past year or stayed the same while the V-8 values have tumbled.

Trading down to a 430 is sure way to lose even more money. The dealer will never give you the true difference price bwteeen the two, he is in the business to move cars and make money not buy more expensive cars than on his lot. The market for a 599 is probably much smaller than for a 430 too, so he will likely have the V12 longer. Another minus in his mind.

Not to mention the 430, even a used one that has already had some depreciation, will continue to drop in price substantially. Look at 360 prices for some idea where a 430 would be in four years.

Except for the 612 which has plumeted. Woody, that 599 is bloody gorgeous. Keep the beast! I agreed (FWIW) that the 599 market with depreciate more slowly than the others.
If you love it, then keep it. If not, let me know. I may be interested!

    Ciao!

I would go with a 288GTO or F40 if the funds are available.

"288 GTO or F40 in the modern era OR 365 GTB or 250 GTO of the earlier era" have the best chance of not loosing money.

Buy a 275gtb short nose for 625 ish. You will not loose. Even if your not into the vintage stuff yet, do some research.

Trading for an F40 is a good call.

What you can also consider is...

Since you mentioned that you are in the position to get a new car from dealer, you can also consider going for a 458 Spider or Scuderia; the line for the coupe is probably quite long by now.

If you put a deposit on the Spider or Scuderia now, you will probably end up in a very early slot. You can drive it for a year or so then sell it at premium or at least before depreciation hits. Keep running this cycle for as long as you want and ultimately all you have to put out is the "deposit".

Spider --> Scuderia --> Scuderia Spider --> next generation V8 coupe.... and so on....

This is how alot of HK high rollers do and it works out quite well for them.

Yea, I'd hold on and try to jump in on a 458 if you can. I think that'd be your best bet for minimizing the hit.

Be smart..don't ever buy a new car! If you buy somthing a couple of years old you won't lose as much money. Let the other guy take the hit. Then you swoop in and grab the car and enjoy it.

The 599 is pretty much the ultimate daily driver/modern gt street car. Keep that and pick up something vintage if you want a car which appreciates in value. As mentioned a supercar or pre-1972 2 seater would probably be a good bet.

sell the 599 to a private buyer and pick up a 308. Use the proceeds to buy some Gold.
