I was wondering what the best way to clean glass (car windows) is? I know a squeege works good but its hard to use on the inside. I was also wondering about something I heard once about detailing...you can polish glass with really fine steel wool.

    thanks

I agree with the newspaper, but I also use rubbing alcohol with the newspaper, .72 for a bottle, buy a sprayer, it evaporates very very fast, so no streaks.

yeah thats what I remember reading somewhere a while back in an article about detailing. It said that you can use a fine steel wool (the kind with no soap or other cleaners) and you can polish glass. I haven't tried it, but I think it would scratch the glass??? Maybe I'll try some on a small piece of glass to see how it works.

most glass is coated these days with plastic for various reasons........get a Griot's catalog! LOL!

No steel wool on MY windows, newsprints OK if you don't have a light interior, it smudges.

I've also seen leather damage from Windex, the ammonia did it, IIRC.

I recomend Stoner's (endorsed by Jeff Spicoli) Invisiglass and an old undershirt that has been washed a lot. very little lint and invisiglass doesn't streak.

It works great just use it on glass only not plastic. Use 0000 grade steel wool. Razor blades work well also.

Yeah, like others posted, newspaper works well cleaning glasses.

I used Windex or other glass cleaner. Before applying these solution, I wash glass w/ Kitchen (dish) cleaner & sponge. It suppose to degrease well. I noticed these does better than car wash soap I use for body.

I agree with the Stoner's recommendation but Wurth's also makes an excellent aerosol cleaner that doesn't streak. I use that and plain ole' (white) paper towels. Does the trick for me.

I use Windex and newspaper. It really is the best way. I have tried all different methods, and nothing made a better, cleaner window than newspaper and windex.

A hammer. A good swing, and you'd swear the glass isn't there. And you'd be right. :D

Here's the real poop. Newspaper doesn't do anything special other than absorb water. Pretty much the same as a paper towel does. Windex and other glass cleaners with amonia are not good. Amonia is what leaves the streaks. It is also not good to get on leather and plastic.
Go to a Costco store and get some Sprayway Glass cleaner. It is the same stuff that most automated glass cleaning equipment uses only under a different name. ( the kind of equipment that washes insulated glass prior to assembly )
Never use a razor blade on glass unless it is new and lubricated with glass cleaner, otherwise it will scratch the crap out of the glass.. Never use any form of steel wool on glass unless you want some heavy deposits off the glass and don't mind minor scratches. If you do use steel wool keep it lubricated with glass cleaner also. It will not polish the glass. The only thing that will actually polish glass in stuff like Cerium Oxide.

My teen age daughters favor the "erratic circular mitten technique" on interior glass so when you drive the car that afternoon it looks like someone smeared milk on the inside of the glass.

An aerosole product called "Dissappearing Windows" has worked well for me. Newspaper is by far the best material for cleaning glass.

Instead of newspaper, use clean newsprint. You will have the absorbency without the mess. Paper towels leave lint behind.

0000steel wool is risky, but will work if you don't use too much pressure, and avoid plastic like the plague.

what exactly do you mean by clean newsprint? as opposed to a newspaper?

Why doesnt someone come out with a lint free paper towel product for cleaning glass if thats even possible?

Clean newsprint it the paper that newspapers use, but before they print on it. It is available at U-Haul, where they sell it as packaging material. It is also available at artist's supply stores.
