I have been shopping around for a new (to me) car and it's getting close to buy time. It's coming down to two cars. A 2000 Corvette convertible or a 2001 Boxster S. Both are red w/ black interior and both have a manual transmissions. The Vette looks great and is really fast and fun to drive. The Porsche looks great and is fun to drive but isn't quite as fast. The P car is also a couple $k more but has fewer miles (8k vs 20k). My original plan was to get a Vette but I'm really digging the Boxster. I have a bit of experience driving Corvettes and really enjoy the power, other than test driving a regular Boxster I have no experience with Porsche. The Porsche seems more refined but I'm wondering if after a few months/years it will seem underpowered compared to all the bigger hp cars on the market.

What I'm looking for is any sort of advice, guidence, experience, assumptions or uninformed opinions anybody might have with either or both of these cars and/or suggesting other cars I might have not considered. I already decided a Ferrari would not be a good choice for me right now.

On Edit: Another big factor is which car will get more chicks???? (Ok, I just threw this in to justify moving the thread back to other off topic :D)

If you like the speed of the vette and the engineering and handling ofthe porsche, you should consider an E46M3. They are one of the best cars out there. Very quick, great handling, good looking and they hold there value very well. If you buy a vette, it will be the most expensive to own of the three. The depreciation alone will kill you. The repairs may too. I love vettes, but I would never own one that is out of warranty. My friend has one and it is a piece of ****. Everything breaks so fast, he can't keep up with it. Good luck.

Try looking into a NSX if possible. A 97 would out handle in the turns and be faster in a straight then the other 2 as well as be more reliable overall. I can give you contact info of dealerships where to buy acura parts from for 15-20% off msrp as well. Get a tubi and you will be amazed. (intoxicating sound). The feel of the NSX is like none other, very well planted well mannered car that can go (relatively) fast. Great handling, ergonomics, feel, predictablity, reliability....

Oh and one use of that 6spd and you would swear you were MS in shifting...its just so incredible of a shifter.

But as with anything, try em all and see which feels right to you.

A Boxster S is a great car. You'd have to be doing something really dumb to lose it in one. HW, if you are looking at a 2001 S, my guess is that the asking prices are in the 30s.

If so, you need to go by a Honda dealer and see if you fit in a 2000 S. For da money, it can't be beat.

That is definitely the deal-breaker for an otherwise fine car. They're floating in the mid-to-high $20k's right now, too.

Had mine just over a year and I'm still smitten with it. Caught myself just staring at it yesterday. You'll find yourself taking drives everywhere. It's not my daily, but I still put 12k last year. I've had it on the track as well and did not even come close to pushing the cars limits. I could ramble about this all day.

I am looking in the $30s. The S2000 was on my short list but it seemed awful small to be "practical". The day I looked at them it was raining like crazy and traffic was a mess so I didn't go for a test drive but just sitting in it didn't feel too cramped. All the car dealers here in SA are closed on Sunday (I'm still not sure what's up with that...) but I will give it another look.

I was in the same shoes you were in a few weeks ago after I sold my Supra. I was shopping for roadsters, etc... I test drove a Boxter, BoxterS, S2000, '00 M Roadster, 350Z, '95 Corvette, '99 Corvette, etc... The Boxters were OK, but the S2000's handled better, and are closer in performance to the BoxterS. The S2000 just felt like a better car, over-all. I also heard from many people that maintenance costs on the Boxters is ridiculous($5k+ in a couple years). At one point I was dead-set on a Sebring Silver on Red Leather S2000. Then I started comparing that to other cars like the C5 Corvette. The 'vette had much more power, more luxury, more features, more potential, similar gas mileage(I average 27.3mpg!), etc... The only thing the S2000 had over the Corvette was handling. In the end, I settled a '99 6spd. Corvette Torch Red on Black leather(Targa top, not cabriolet) with 34k miles. It could literally pass as a showcar though, that clean. It's a very nice car, and it turns plenty of heads like you're looking for. ;)

Hope this helps, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Here is my list for you (voted Boxster on the poll)

    1.Boxster S
2.Older NSX --still fast, fun, and reliable...cheap to maintain :) An NSX will be much more exotic than a Corvette in Texas! Especially since all of your buddies drive Corvettes.
    3.Corvette

Id say since you have already experienced the Corvette a lot, drive something else...try something new!! Be different!

Hi Mark. For overall practicality/pimptasticness/layability I think you should also consider a used BMW M3 and the Mercedes AMG (E55 or CLK-class). Either will be more than fast enough, have gobs of style, with four seats and room to haul people and your stuff. Both are very tough, heavy cars and will last a while. Best of all, the insurance won't kill you. These are all important factors if this is going to be your everyday driver and only car.

    In response to various people:

I briefly thought about an M3 but it really doesn’t “do it” for me. It’s a great car but a little bit conservative for what I’m looking for right now.

I’m would be interested to hear what kind of big $ maintenance expenses the Vette might have. My Mother has had a C5 since 97 and put ~90k miles on it without any real problems. The remote died (not just battery) and had to be replaced and the oil pressure sender went out but no big repair bills. If this is the exception I would be interested to hear about it. As far as depreciation goes….If you bought a new Vette a couple years ago you would be taking a big hit. That’s why I’m looking at used cars. The Vette I’m considering has already taken the $20k drop.

I guess I should wander back on over to the Pelican Parts board and ask some questions but most of what I have read and the people I talk to indicate that Boxsters are fairly bulletproof. The 60k service is ~$1,500 but I would have a little bit of time to figure it out since the car I’m considering only has 8K miles. I have access to a shop with lifts and almost every tool imaginable so I can do basic maintenance stuff rather than taking it back to the dealer. If anyone has actual experience with it being a maintenance $$$ intensive car I would like to get a better idea what I might be looking at.

The NSX looks like more money than I want to spend, to find one below $40K it would have to be an older higher mileage car than what I want.

FWIW this would not be my only car. I have an old Toyota as a backup/alternate. (Shan, It was good to talk to you.)

Jordan, My AF buddies actually were trying to get one of those silly cars with a horse badge. They said it would be fast and fun and that even cheap F cars make lots of power with a few simple mods........ My reply??? Just no way I can keep my pimpin' strong in a Mustang. :D :D

I personally would stay away from the Boxter. I would pick the Vette over the Boxster if those the only choices. Two of my coworkers have boxter S models. One has had 3 motors replaced in 19 months, and the other has been trouble free. You can read up on rennlist or 6speedonline as far as the problems with the boxter. I personally know of 3 people that have lost engine or trannys on their new Boster S's. Sad to see that kind of craftsmanship from a great company. I have driven one considerably, and though its a nice car, I feel it is a rather poor man's porsche. If you can't afford a 911, my recommendation would be stay away from the Boxter.

The corvette is a great car. Though I am not a fan of American cars, except for the Viper, the Vette is definitely more bang for your buck. However, I spend about a week in TX couple of weeks back and I noticed Vettes are rather popular. I don't like driving something that everyone else in the world has. Thus I would stay away from the vette.

I would have picked the M3, but you said that is too conservative for you. I would recommend the S2000 if you like it, one of the best handlings car for the buck as the good doctor predicted. As far as NSX's go, they are awesome cars, but I would like tell you to buy the 97+ in spa yellow pearl if you can afford it.

Another car to look at is the M Roadster/M coupe cars. They were based on the Z3 platform with either the S52 motors in the earlier cars (240hp) and the S54 motor in the newer cars (315esque hp). THose cars are mean looking, wear super fat rubbers in the rear, and will always make sure you stand out.

Good luck with whatever you decide to buy.

Actually the thread is still in the wrong forum, since this should be posted in the cars/motorcycle forum. ;) :D

    NSX is pimpin.
Boxster ... barf ... kind of a lady's car, if you really ask me. You'd need gold spinners to make it pimpin just a bit.
Vette ... well, most likely a great car, but there are many out there IMO
The inline 6 from Bimmer are exceptionnal, as well as the 5L V8 (M5). If you can go beyond the BMW reputation and image, they're awesome. Not really pimpin' though. Maybe purple, with bumper balls hanging from the hitch, velvet dice and leppard fur dash and steering wheel would help.
How about something more exotic? like, say a Qvale Mangusta (Mustang based), or a T-Rex?
In the same minimalist vein, you have a caterham (Super Seven "replicas"), or Lotus Elise...
Jag XK8 is really nice. But automatic sucks.

Yea, I was the one who moved it in the first place since I thought it belonged there...

As for NSX's I sold my car LAST YEAR for under 39k for a 97 with 35k miles. 97 is the way to go with these cars, as its the first year of the bigger better 3.2L engine.

You could get an older model Viper GTS for mid 30's.Incredible performance, easy and cheap to maintain, you wont lose money as they have stopped depreciating. And chicks dig the snake.Only 3500 produced in 7 years. You will draw a crowd.

Lotus Esprit s4 or s4s will leave you with $ room for maintenance and have already taken depreciation pinch.
    http://www.lotusespritworld.com/EBuying/which.html

Some would argue that the V8 would be a better choice - however, s4 and s4s have highest "collectible" forecast amongst Esprits.

It would be cool but after a bit of looking all Vipers I found on the web in the 30's were kind of ratty. The only ones I have seen for sale in SA have been newer and way out of my price range. If you know of any good places to look I would be interested.

I hadn't thought of that one, interesting. From reading a bit on the site you linked to it sounds like it would be a little high maintenance. And if I'm going to start hitting that crack pipe I might as well go all the way and buy a Ferrari.

I looked at a couple of Qvale Mangustas at the local dealer but it really wasn't the car for me. It's more than I want to spend and the trunk is unusable with the top down which makes it rather impractical for what I want. I talked to the Lotus dealer and they said if I ordered now I could probably have a car by January. I decided against it because as cool as it would be it's more than I want to spend and I'm guessing it would be rather impractical for hauling my junk around.

I wanted a little more exposure so I moved it back :D

If I get a van it will at least be one big enought for sofa/mattress in the back and a disco ball.

Hmmmm...... Looks like I will be doing a little more research.

Vettes are popular down here but I don't see them so much that it would bother me. Boob jobs are pretty popular here too, that doesn't mean I go looking for flat chested women :D

Go to Porsche Petes Boxster Board (www.ppbb.com) and do a search for RMS. That will be enough to scare you away from the Boxster or the 996. I would go for a new S2000, a used Vette or an air cooled 911.

We have a 2000 Boxster S I bought for my wife - had the rear main seal replaced when I bought it as it was leaking so took that in to consideration on the price. Not unfixable - you just have to know to have the car inspected. Mind you ours has almost 60K miles on it now. I also put a new computer in it and am having some issues - before with computer part number "xxx01" it ran like crap but the Tiptronic worked fine. Now with computer "xxx06" it runs like a champion but the Tip doesn't work. I have a great Porsche guy but the long and short of it is that with the watercooled cars Porsche is learning along with their customers.

Having said all of that, I will probably replace this car with another - my wife absolutely loves this car, it drives like the shizzles, and all she wants to do is get a 6-speed and loud exhaust. Prolly will go to the dealer at the end of the year and get a mo-fo of an extended warranty.

If it is pimpin' you want, go the Viper. Loud, macho, etc...

    Cheers
    Kevin
