I've seen several examples of '78 308 GTSs, all with different side mirrors. I've seen Vitaloni California, Baby Turbo and the big rectangular mirror. What is "correct" for this year?

Also, I've seen different inside door panel pockets. Some (like mine) have a leather pocket with a latched flap while others have a formed tray with no top. At first, I thought they switched from the pocket to the tray around '79, but I've seen a few 78s with the tray. What's the story here?

I thought the flapped pockets were for GTS & open trays for GTB

'78 GTS could also be "updated" with the better ;) design -- mine was.

    (to reflect Bill's correction).

On US Spec./Delivery cars(78 model year)the manuallly operated Vitaloni California mirror was standard on drivers side (passenger side, optional $ extra, usually dealer fitted) and the inside door panel pockets were leather with a latched flap on a GTS.

Changed in 1980 model year with introduction of 2V fuel injected cars to square "flag type " electric mirror on drivers side, formed open door pockets and " fishbone " type leather panelling on seats. Oil temp. and Clock went from dashboard to Centre console (initially in Vertical positions then horizontal).

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers

I think fazzman has it right..

ALL my 1976-77 have open door pockets......two of the three have the teardrop Vitaloni California on driver's side only.

    Thanks guys -- good information.

I've seen one '78 Euro GTS with a single rectangular power mirror, latching map pockets but without the speaker grills in the doors. Instead of the grills, the leather had a circular pattern perforation over the speaker. So many configurations and it tough to tell what is "original."

Since I have owned my car for 25 years and am the second owner, I do know what is original, at least on a '79 GTS. Locking flap pockets on each door and black and silver speaker grills.

The following pic is of my new door panels which are duplicates of the original except for color.

With luck, my seats and carpet will match the door panels late next week.

I have owned my '78 Euro GTS since August of 1983. Locking map pockets, black and silver speaker grills, Pioneer AM/ FM cassette and another band? in between. Single flag mirror on the drivers side. Sadly in storage awaiting my loving restoration for a decade and a half, it was, according to Guiseppe at the late but great Grand Prix SSR, the fastest 308 he had ever driven. Screaming Webers, single distributor, gauges in Italian and kilometers, spacesaver spare, the bumpers....ahhh, that old familiar adrenaline rush just thinking about changing up as fast as my feet and hand can move!
    Rick.

My US '79 GTS does not have the bag under the armrest nor the speaker grille. Instead of the speaker grill there are just perforations in the leather of the door panels over where the speakers sit. Do I have some different sort of door panel or am I just missing those pieces?

Jeez Bubba, how many 308s you sittin' on there? If you decide to sell, don't sell 'em all at once, you'll flood the market and we'll have 308s selling for $5 grand!

I used to own a very original '78 U.S. model GTS, black with creme leather. It, like the red car above, had the locking flap door pockets, chrome lined speaker grilles, and single Vitalone California mirror.

Correction regarding the early injected cars: The earliest (produced in 1980) GTBi/GTSi still had the non-powered California mirror, and the earliest GTBis had the carbureted style GTB headliner without the roof console. The power "flag" style mirrors seem to be a 1981-onward thing. At least for the U.S. models. There have been a few such examples of early (1980) GTBis on eBay in the past year or two, and mine is also like that.

If you don't have the pocket, do you have the tray? As for the speaker, perhaps a PO recovered the panels and opted to not cut out the hole for the grill.

At some point, I'm going to ditch my Baby Turbos for the Californias. I like the teardrop shape so much better.

You are absolutely correct there mate. These very early 2V injected cars had the clock and oil temp. guage stacked in a vertical position in thecentre console(later changed to "side by side" horizontal arrangement),single non electric Vitaloni "California" drivers mirror and also were on 14' wheels....(Replaced later by the horrid TRX Metric 15" wheels)

    Cheers,

    Pete

There have been days when the coolant dumps on me as I pull the failed alternator, when "$5 grand" sounds about RIGHT!!!!

But then I'll button everything up, roll out to the Parkway in front of my apartment and make it go to 8K RPM!

Let's just say the neighbors know who I am.....

They have advantages, they adjust thru two planes, the RH one adds a little margin of safety, IMO..

I concur with others as the picture in my profile shows. Very original 78. Flap with locking pouch. Californian tear drop mirror only on the driver's side.
