I understand that if you race or track your car, you are looking to reduce the overall weight of the car.

Other than that, why are people spending large amounts of money for Carbon side sheilds, air boxes, radio dash surrounds, paddle shifters etc.? I am not against it, just wondering why it is so great when it is soooo expensive?

Why do you own a Ferrari when you could have a corolla for a third the price?

IMO for interior pieces and air boxes it's a design fad like stainless steel appliances. I think it will pass. 10 years ago I was completely into it, but I'm starting to get tired of it these days.

Being in the industry of carbon fiber we see things from just about every perspective you can imagine. In the end the fascination with carbon fiber merely satisfies a need by people to want to continually improve or differentiate themselves from the next person. As a result:

    - We drive cars that are capable of performance limits way beyond what can be done on the street. As mentioned why drive a Ferrari when a Corolla gets you there just the same.

    - We wear jewelery that in no way increases our actual quality of life (why is wearing a 250K Patek in any way justifiable when a Swatch does the same job?)

    - We put carbon fiber in our Ferrari because it makes us feel just that little bit different and special. The real quantifiable benefit is almost secondary as exploiting that benefit is near on impossible in the real world but we feel good because we know it is there.

Not all things in life are the function of charts and spreadsheets and carbon fiber is one of those things that are a passionate decision much like the ownership of a Ferrari is.

I think it as everyone has said...just a personal preference. I personally don't like the look of it....but it does seem to be popular right now.

I think it conveys "high tech" for a lot of people. I like it for the weight savings so that means I am not really into the bits and bobbles application for appearance. I appreciate the look but its not for me at this time. I don't have any of it in my car but if I were to add some it would be to add seats made of it and/or perhaps the CS mirrors.

All the high exotic these days seem to feature it, Ferrari, lambo etc... on their cars so if it wasn't popular or liked they wouldnt be featuring the look or product. I have my interior and several exterior pieces in cf aso I have dropped some weight in addition to look. Also changed my exhaust to factory cs challege style from ferrari further dropping weight as well as adding some hp performance so its all good to me

And it keeps better time. But, when you sit down at a bar and order a drink, it tells everyone, especially the hot babe sitting next to you, that you are not only rich, but also that you willing to spend your money on frivolous things (like her).

    These are all affectations.

What I don't get is the wrap that makes it look like CF.

The fake CF wrap is generally used by those people who are ok with a fake Rolex, Cubic Zirconia jewelery, and street bought Louis Vuitton leather (or rather pleather) goods. Some people are just fine with pretending that's all.

As if the Ferrari doesn't differentiate us from most everyone else.

I agree with this. The fad stems from the use of CF in race cars to lower weight. People include it in their cars to mimic (not replicate) what is happening on race cars. That makes it a stylistic choice.

Personally, I like it BUT I can't get on board with a bunch of CF on my car. If I were going there I would be angling at performance and weight savings like seats, not at CF trim. Then again, I don't get the whole black wheel fad either. Most of the time they look terrible.

How is carbon fiber accessories in modern supercars different from chromed accessories in classic 50's and 60's cars? Everyone accepts that chromed details in a classic Cadillac is quite appropriate, right?

    Amen.

It is embarrassing IMO. Carbon fibre was invented for a function and yet most use it because they like the pattern ... women think like that.

Next we will be buying cars that are cute.

Very different. Again carbon fibre was invented to be light and strong.

Accessories are not even required at all, leaving them off is the lightest option so by unnecessarily using them you are actually adding weight ... silly.

Also replacing say a fibreglass panel with carbon fibre probably does not save any weight and if the panel could be fibreglass in the first place it does not need to be any stronger.

It is no different to ricing a Honda Civic IMO.
