A lot of folks got this email today and assume it refers to the upcoming SUV. Doesn't Ferrari have to meet some sort of Euro emissions requirements across its fleet? Why would it waste a monster V12 in a mass produced SUV and deprive its largest and oldest fanbase of a V12 in a beautiful sports or GT car? It certainly appears the V12 is not dead and even if they ultimately have a hybrid 'assist'-hey that is a LaFerrari. There is one selling for about 4.5M on BaT right now!

It's obviously the Purosangue. It even says "thoroughbred" in the mail.

I guess that is probably correct then. It still seems strange that they would put that engine in a car, er truck I guess, most of whose drivers will not even notice whether it is a turbo 8 or even 6 with hybrid assist. They do acknowledge in the note the importance of the V12 in Ferrari's history so I am sure it will not go away for the good cars we all want. Can they still manufacture large numbers of V12s and get around the emissions requirements?

Regarding CO2, yes they can, two reasons:

    * Being a SVM (small volume manufacturer) they have a different standard for CO2 compliance

    * IF they exceed their CO2 allowance, they pay a monetary fine (not a "stop sale" as would occur for other standards such as those requiring the GPFs, sound levels, etc)

As for 'why' a V12, because they can set the highest price possible for such an exclusive product and their clients will happily oblige by purchasing. And, while they can still produce such a vehicle, they will. There are EU regulations afoot that could prohibit such productions within the next few years (that's why the hybrids and eventual all-electric 'truck')...but that is currently unknown and Ferrari will remain a SVM regardless so there could potentially be allowances, but that cannot be determined yet...

Supposedly, the V12 version of the SUV won’t be mass produced and very limited quantities will be available.

I suspect the initial two years will use an unassisted V12 (so, ‘limited’) and then joined by a hybrid V6 or V8 in 2025. I expect the V12 will also become a hybrid at that point.
