this has got to be an amateur question, but here it goes... Been driving my 355 for a few months, not knowing what this knob does...I've check my manual, tried searching. No clue what this is. Can anyone identify what this is? Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm sure someone who knows will chime in but I believe that is where they put the controls on the cars that had the built in radar detectors. Try a search on radar detectors here and I think you'll find the answers.
Excellent! my hair does tend to dry out with the top down. Any good write-ups on refilling the "hair gel dispenser?" haha
I have a pot knob there on my car as well. I don't believe it's factory and has something to do with the aftermarket stereo system. I've had the car for two years and still have no idea what exactly it's does though.
Nothing there on my 355 Spider. It whatever aftermarket product a previous owner installed. No telling what kind of crap as been added to these cars over the years. I just looked under the dash of my 328 and I found all kinds of things. A built in garage opener, a "kill" switch, an alarm system and a glued on sub-woofer. None of which worked. Cleaning out all of the crap and going back to original wiring.
What he said. Previous owner of my Porsche TT had one installed and it looks just like the picture. My unit is about ten years old and not worth crap, lots of false alarms.
Exactly. The outer knob is the city-off-highway selector while the central knob is the volume control. There are normally two L.E.D - red (alert) and clear(city/highway). Only the clear indicator is showing in the picture so maybe the red indicator is located in another spot.
I had a K40 on a Boxster. Worst of both worlds - Expensive & Horrible. Only good part of the whole deal was that I drove SF-LA-SF for the installation.
No voting or opinions necessary. It is absolutely the knob for the K40 radar detector as previously posted. I have the same knob in mine in the same place. OP, do you have 2 little red LED lights on both sides of the gauges in the binnacle? Do you know what they are for?
Badabing, I've got the K40 on my 348. I'm pretty sure the red lights on either side of the cluster indicate if the radar signal was picked up by front or rear collector. On a side note, I'd like to thump the installer that poked a hole in my center console to mount the control knob. A knob indeed.
well, i guess that give some insight to another question I had... I don't think I have two lights on both sides, but I pulled the dash yesterday to check a couple connections and found a little red light that seemed a little out of place (bottom right corner). My guess is this is the radar light. From what I've found on various forums, is that there would be lights on both sides of your gauge cluster if you have both front and rear radar sensors. I believe I only have the front sensors installed (at least I haven't been able to locate any sensors in the rear).
There are several variations and as you said there will be two red lights if you have both front and rear detectors but only one if just the front. The clear light located next to the switch in your picture indicates if the detector is in city or highway mode.
My car has the lights on the cluster but not the one near the knob (thankfully) My rear sensor is mounted on the driver side, on the inner side of the rear bumper cover just behind the charcoal filter.
