Although it's day is past, to me the greatest race ever was the Mille Miglia. I would have to go with LeMans as the current best heritage and test of man and machine.
+1 for the Miata Spec races. As for big time racing, MotoGP hands down. It's so far ahead, there isn't even a series in second place. Just straight to 3rd.
It has to be something from the middle of the professional ladder. It can't be at the bottom (entry level go kart) where you have too many wannabees. It also can't be at the top of the ladder (F1) where technology has a huge impact. So I'd say a spec series in between. British F3 or French Formula Renault come to mind. In the US maybe Formula Dodge or Atlantic.
The World Series by Renault seems to be the most competitive... some great new prospects for F1 too... Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen... are just a couple of good racers to come out of that series.
As much as I love the Dakar I totally disagree. The big guns have much better equipment and all the help from their mechanics and support teams one can imagine. In this year's rally the winner of the truck class was a given from the start. The winner in the car class was (like in F1) one of a small predictable group. I don't know (dont care) anything about motor bikes, but I'd imagine the winner was not a nobody as well, but somebody with factory support.
Btcc-British touring cars MotoGp Bsb-British Superbikes The lead in all these 3 races can change umpteen times in a lap unlike Formula Insomnia, sorry I meant Formula 1
NASCAR Nextel Cup or Busch racing The ending of the Busch race at Watkins Glen just a few moments ago was really cool.
I'd vote for that, these guys run neck & neck & bang doors in a pack all around the track Might have to check it out
I really enjoyed watching some Formula BMW races live and on TV. GP2 is also fun to watch. I think a Le Mans 24hour race is the most competitive.
+1 for MotoGP AMA Superbike has gotten interesting also WSBK aint bad. actual racing, passes for position.
My first pick would be Le Mans, second Spa 24, but I'm thinking GPM might provide a totally different meaning to the word competitive. In GPM, cars are all the same, no tire changes, no pit stops, very few driver aids - all down to the driver. Saw that Danner has pole for tomorrow's race. Carol
How come? Everybody knew before they even started the race that Audi would win it hands down. The rules were written by the eco oriented club to guarantee a win in a Diesel.
Henri's team gave them a helluva run for it. Montagny-Loeb-Helary were only 4 laps down; Allan -Kristensen-Capello were 13 laps down. Given Henri's new chassis due about the end of the year - next year's Le Mans should be very good. Audi's dominance over the years is no different than Ferrari's Championship wins. The big irritant to most folks is the fact Audi ran a diesel which is not that unusual in European racing. Wait until next year . . . Carol
Yes, the Diesel highly irritates me and will be the reason I'll never take them seriously, but that's not my point. You talk of Audio dominance and 4 and 13 laps down and call that still competitively? I know it is Le Mans and goes on for 24 hours, but still. That's btw exactly why a while ago I asked the question, whether I (or any other amateur) could win Le Mans if I'd team up with the best team and two top notch drivers who driver all but say 3 laps, that I'll drive doodling around at 100 mph.
LeMans and AMLS are already proposing smaller fuel cells for the diesels next year. There are maximum time limits that any one driver can be in the car. Are there minimums? I think everyone must drive the car somewhat equally.
