1920's-30s Bugatti Royale: about $9 million or something.
Ferrari 250 GTO- well in the millions, the famous one that was sold and went to Japan and was auctioned recentely.

Yup, 250 GTO that went to Mr. Kato in Japan in the late 80s I believe. I cannot confirm it, but I believe there was one car more expensive than this GTO. From memory it was a Mercedes W154 GP car.

    OK guys,

i think the most expensive car in the world would be a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost from around 1911, they only porduced 2 and only 1 still exists. this is now owned by Rolls Royce, and will therefore never be sold, however professionals speculate that if ever to be sold would fetch around $40m

    Cheers

I thnk the Jaguar XJ13 would be up there as well.

But it's commonly known that the car that's been 'sold' or at least produced in any significant number and is "INSTANTLY" recognisable by even lay people as a Ferrari is the incomparable 250GTO.

yes, this is true. It is that RR, but nobody knows what it would sell for, so you can't really buy into that speculation.

There are many Ferraris around the $15mm mark, which is about as high as cars have actually changed hands for. 250 GTOs are there, certain 250TRs, and, alas, so is my favorite Ferrari of all time.

Question. When BMW bought Rolsl Royce, it bought all of Rolls Royce's assests right? Including the Silver Ghost or no? If so, what was the price listed on the Silver Ghost? Or was it just part of the package and we can't know how much?

It is a tough question I think as once the car falls to its right full owner and he never sells or get it appraised then we probably will not hear about it. However, the staggering prices that we see trading regularly would be Ferraris.

yes - Ferraris, and some Bugattis and Alfas are basically the few up there that are changing hands at these levels.

There are certain Ferraris out there today that are definitely at or over the $15mm mark, and it's not just GTOs anymore.

It might be valued at $40m, but things are only worth what people will pay for it. I find it hard someone paying that much for that!

The 1907 RR Silver Ghost is actually owned by Bentley.....this is the car that "started it all" for RR. I'm gonna have to look into the afore-mentioned 1911 Ghost....sounds interesting. I think the Bugatti Royale holds the record for the most money paid for a car, I think one was sold privately for near $40 million a few years ago.

I always thought the Bugatti Royal series were the most expensives cars..In fact I think they fall under the priceless catagory. There are only 4 in the entire world (i think) and I think 2 are in private collections and the others are in Museums. But maybe the Sliver Ghost is worth more..who know's. But I do know that there are quite a few cars that top the Ferrari's in Value.

In the mid-90's an RR collector offered Rolls-Royce $100mill. for it and they did not accept.

From what I remember, the Silver Ghost is supposed the most expensive car ever, estimated value being $50m. However, having never changed hands and only one ever being built, what would it be appraised against? When VW sold RR to BMW, VW decided to keep the Silver Ghost in the deal. This is all according to a show I watched on the History Channel.

Something tells me that even $15,000,000.00 wouldn't get you that car... i think the owner really likes it... :)

Sotheby's Ferrari auction at Fiorano, May 2005

quote: "Chief among the highlights of the historic cars in the sale is the 1958 Ferrari 412 S, S/N 0744, which has an illustrious past in North American racing, having been driven by giants such as Phil Hill, Richie Ginther and John von Neumann. It is a unique car with the most powerful front engine offered by Ferrari at that time. This is without doubt one of the greatest cars ever to be offered for sale." end of quote

    We'll know after May
