I'll give you this. For a young man, you have great taste. Even though I lost my ass on my Maranello, they are great cars. I'm happy to have owned one.

Curious because I've never seen a valeo....you keep reaching behind the steering wheel, is there a button or something you push before clicking into the next gear?

No, that was just me reaching across and turning on the directional before turning.

The Valeo is simply the gear shift lever and your foot.

Thanks for posting this....I would rather have a gated shifter like this than flappy paddles.....why didn't this survive?

There weren't that many made. Plus, as they aged, it became harder to find support for the system, so I think some of them were probably lost to neglect and/or parting out.

I think it's a pretty cool system -- and the fore-runner of all the current F1 / DCT transmissions that are proliferating everywhere.

The cool thing is that you still get the gated shifter. Which to a lot of people is so quintessentially Ferrari.

I asked myself the same question, but it became obvious that the paddles would be quicker, even with the same automatic clutch, and your hands are always on the wheel. Keep in mind that the paddle shift was marketed by Ferrari as the latest tech their F1 drivers were using. They actually called the transmission F1!

I had a Honda Trail 70 of about 1969 vintage, and it had an automatic clutch, so I go way back with this concept. :)

I think they only made about 30-40 cars total through 1993.

And shortly after that, didn't the 355 F1 debut?

    Sweet Bike!

I had it's little brother -- the Mini-Trail 50, and my mom had a Super Cub (50cc). Both had the semi-auto transmission.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I don't have any surviving photos from that time in my life!

355 F1 was first offered as an upgrade option in 1997.

When first offered as F1 , it was linked to Formula One which back in those days was dangerous, sexy etc etc

Nowadays F1 is not half as exciting, people are not so interested, except the real die hard fans from yesteryear.

So that F1 tech on the 355 is nowhere near as cool as when it first appeared.Couple that with the engine out service and you have a double whammy.

IIRC, in 97, only in Europe. Not the US until 98.

Yes, because the 308/328 and Mondials 8 - 3.2 are pretty simple for most competent DIYers. The Mondial t (3.4) requires a significant leap in capability, and helpful to have a lift handy.

I'm a Mondial owner myself, but quite honestly I can't see any Mondial going up in value for a series of reasons, at least to an interesting value from which onwards it can be considered an investment or a collectible car. This says nothing about the car, though. It's a very competent all-rounder, very reliable and very cheap to run either way (DIY or official dealer). Also, if the car is affordable, it can appreciate 50% for instance (from say 30k USD to 45k USD), but it'll still be very far away from an iconic Ferrari.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

You need to keep in mind the F1 transmission was designed for racing. You floor it and pull paddles as fast as you can. When you brake you use your left foot and pull the left paddle as fast as you can. Plus, the race tech can play with the software, so forth and so on. This tech didn't translate very well on the street. To keep the car from jerking, they had to slow down the shifts. Backing up and starting on a hill also were not on the agenda. It didn't translate well to the street and, by comparison to a stick, eats clutches. I'd hang my head in shame if a clutch didn't last 50k miles.

For people who are sure of the next car, how many are you scooping up now? Surely a given 100K per car profit is worth the investment now?

Too bad it takes too much time... doing it like a fantasy football league could be fun. Everyone has their team of cars and the one with the most profit after (x) years wins. (and anyone who did it for real gets a nod of respect as well as their obvious win).
