    why own a Ferrari?

well, I went to school for many many years. Got nothing to show for it. So I got a Ferrari. When people ask why, I just say.....

    "justification for higher education"

(sorry this popped into my head when I saw the thread title and couldn't resist)

For me,an investment. I love cars and Ferrari has always run deep in my family, but I really am only using it as a stepping stone. For instance,I didn't get a Gt4 allocation,so I bought a gated 360 due to a family friend needing cash. Due to market conditions,I will sell it when It's all sorted out(sat for a long time). I hope to take the procedes and buy a scud or Gt3RS.It is all perception though,I've grown up very overly exposed to these cars, and am always weary of the attention. Ferraris are all special and do understand my tone would be completely different if I had an F40,F50,Any GTO,Enzo,Laf,and other big money cars, but I don't. I will say, nothing drives like any Ferrari. There is an unmistakable DNA in their cars that cannot be replicated.

It is shaping up to be that right now, however about 5 years ago the opposite was happening.

I bought it for speed, feel/drivign experience, engine and styling, at the time there was also nothing close made by another company, also since childhood in early 70's had always wanted a ferrari because compared to anything else at the time, from a performance sound styling and drive perspective there just was nothing to compare or even close. I kept the BBi all these years for feel/drivign experience, styling and engine/relative-speed. These days its also an old friend, been with me 23 years now.
I can also say some cars motorcylces and women you get into and they fit you like a glove, everything falls to hand the seat sits just right etc. The BBi is that for me, was from day 1.

A few years ago when new car shopping tried a 458 which was a a bit of a stretch but doable, the idea of pickign upa new car in Italy was also compelling. However besides the styling it just didnt compel, to me a modern has to be eminently track capable, and or fun to drive on the street at lower speeds. Yes if I had an unlimited budget I would own a newer ferrari or two along with some other cars, why not. But in the alternative I buy other machines these days that tick more boxes for me, even though they may derpeciate more and cost more over the time as a result. Being meerly of means, my car choices are usualy for one I love driving, can bond with , can track and will want to keep indefinatly because they just have something, the newer ferraris dont really tick enough of those boxes for me.

Of the more recent cars, F40, F50 and sepciale would tick the boxes. The first two are above my pay grade now, and the speciale you just couldnt buy/get on list, otherwise frankly besides what I have(BBI) there really is little post daytona I feel I would really want to own over what are for me significantly better choices elsewhere. Not that ferrari couldnt make a car I would love, they just choose to be more everyday driver Gt these days. As I said the speciale came closest, bu like a 911Rt you couldnt actualy get one. As to future value, its at the bottom of my list, nice if it happens but pretty irrelevant as a motivator.

    I voted "other".

I wanted a convertible that could deliver Formula 1 sound/technology, sub-4 second 0-62 performance that wouldn't look too wild but was crazy enough that it would feel like an occasion whenever I drove it.

Yes, there are other exotic cars but nothing IMO like a Ferrari. I never considered another marque. I had two 911s and my next was going to be a turbo .

    I never got the turbo.

2 reasons - and they are intertwined: my heritage and my youth.

My grandparents were from Italy, it was a core of my childhood (they spoke Italian when we were there, etc). I loved Ferrari from as long as I can remember (literally) and I was a young man in the 80's, so things like Magnum PI or Miami Vice (and the car posters) are burned in my memories.

Owning a 308 was my destiny.

Finally took a poll where im in majority. Can get everything ferrari offers in other cars but one. Style. Thats the key.
New ones offer great combo of virtues like style, performance, comfort, sound, smell, reliability, etc. Only thing missing is value
