This is the rear of the speedometer of my '87 328 GTS. There is a connector that has what appears to be a metallic shielding. What is its purpose?

I'm going to be sending the unit off to be repaired. How do I disconnect the shielded connector?

The wiring diagram for the 3.2 mondial shows 4 wires to the speedo, black, green strip white, yellow, red strip black
If thats any help, that looks like it is brown which is not listed

That's your trip odometer reset cable. It can't be disconnected from the back of the speedometer - you have to unscrew the thin nut holding the trip odometer reset knob to the instrument panel from the front side (at the base of the knob), then push the knob through the instrument panel.

The reset cable with the knob remains attached to the speedometer when you send it off.

There must be. I don't know how to do it, but I do know there have been a whole lot of 35,000 mile 308s for sale for the last 15 years.

Those cables do come off the unit, but no real reason to do so.
