Ok I'll start, Today while watching the French GP my wife, who really enjoys the races and watches every one with me, asks. "Do the races cars have air conditioning"? Wade
I've seen where some F1 drivers had played around with "cool suits" to keep from cooking in the cockpit. I don't know if they still use any of that. And I've heard of some (stock class) racers who actually did run A/C in the car. In the olde days, we used to talk of "480 air conditioning": roll down four windows and drive at 80. So an open cockpit car has air conditioning controlled by the right foot.
I haven't seen any of the F1 drivers with the cool suit. Don't astronauts wear those, too? I think some, if not all, NASCAR drivers wear them. Do all LeMans cars have to have a/c? I heard about this recently where some teams put them in to keep the drivers cool. Maybe it was the Vette C5R and C6Rs. I don't know if it's in effect, but I had heard of a rule going in where all closed cockpit cars would be required to have a/c.
Tell her to watch the 24 Hours of LeMans - one of the upcoming rules is that the closed cars are to have a/c - I don't remember if it's for next year or not - I'd have to check the proposed rules. I'm a wife watching F1 on live timing as well as Speed and I DO lots of "speaking" to my husband during the races as we migrate from tv to computer during the tv commercials. In fact, I probably do more talking than he does during the race. I always stand for the German National Anthem too! "In the olde days, we used to talk of "480 air conditioning": roll down four windows and drive at 80." ->>> Hey . . . . . I remember something very similar - we must be from the same era!!! It seems like I've seen cool-suits just recently on one of the racing venues. Anyway, Viva Ferrari! Viva Michael and yet another record today!!! Carol
Some had cool suits at Utah/Miller ALMS today. Pretty common in hot sports car races, but I have never seen one in F-1.
Didn't DC have some sort of cooling system at one time? I rememeber something about that at one point. Anyway back to the question, i don't have a wife but an Ex once asked me you wanna keep watching that or do something else with a big smile. VCR on TV off..............
My dear ex wife used to wait until the 5 minutes before the live race start to ask me to.....................................you know. I often missed the start.
I have been wondering why they don't wear them also. Perhaps their is too much of a risk of the water in the suits boiling and burning them, if their is a malfunction?
The first time I ever took my to Brands for Heritage racing, there were the 70's F1 cars on the warm up lap and one was swerving side to side to warm the tyres, she said is that one broken as he's all over the track
I think it was on a pre-race show a few years ago that they were discussing cool suit stuff in F1. They weren't talking about complete suits, but only partial coverage. The problem is the weight of the pumps and fluid reservoir needed to run them, and the inability to run any kind of heat exchange in an F1 car -- there just aren't any cool spots on that car that wouldn't be an aero drag. They also talked about the water tube and the water bag to supply it. One driver mentioned starting the race with the water supply frozen, knowing that it would thaw in a couple of laps. But after putting it in the freezer, it wouldn't fit where it was supposed to go in the car. Now I think they've just gone with the "red bull" water bottles on the grid for "product placement" purposes. I do wonder how much exchange there is between the aerodynamicists and the design of the driver's helmet. (Some SA2000 helmets have air exchange options, but i've never seen them in F1.)
In sports car series, many cars run cool suits. Weight and placement are not an issue. The cooler of water and ice becomes part of the balast. In open wheel cars I've never seen one used. Some drivers seem to wear a cool vest, however. I've seen DC wearing one in the pits just before getting in his car. I assume he kept it on in the car, though it is possible he discarded it just before getting in. A cool vest has pockets in it where cold packs are placed.
I have also heard DC talking about wearing a cooling device, but I think he took it off before the race. He mentioned that it (loosley quoting) just helped to keep you comfortable for those first few laps but not much else. I think it may have been at the Malaysain GP this year. I also noticed Christian Klien wearing on on the grid during yesterdays coverage. It was just a white vest over his undershirt while he had his suit pulled down.
My wife has actually been really great about the whole thing. She's sat down with me to watch each and every race, and knows most of the drivers by name now. The bad news is that she pulls for FA instead of Schumi... oh well, we all know who the Master is...
This is not my wife's question (I don't have one!!), but this is what my friends' daughter once asked me. 'Is that Ferrari boy or girl?' Bless her.
When i turn the TV to F1, my wife leaves the room. It's great... that means she can't talk to me when i'm watching the race.
At least now you can show your wife this thread and compliment her for her "good question". (That oughta be good for a couple of nookie points. )
