I have known for some time that Florida does not require any vehicle inspection. Recently I read in a thread that neither does Tennessee. OTH, my state, Massachusetts is down right anal about inspections. All inspection stations have 4 fixed cameras plus one mobile camera which can be monitored remotely by the Registry of Motor Vehicles to be certain all inspections take place. Additionally the State sends undercover cars to inspection stations to make sure they are not circumventing any inspection requirements.

While I think MA is over the top, I am also glad that I don’t regularly drive a car in FL. When I drive there I have never seen more broken down vehicles on the roadways. I am sure this is because you can drive any POS on the roadways. I heard from a resident that if you do get stopped for a moving violation, they can check if your brake lights and headlights operate, your tires aren’t bare and your brakes actually stop the car, but the chances of that occurring are about the same as winning Powerball.

So, what are the inspection requirements in your state?

That's because people from MA are rich. The people of Florida can only buy the used cars after the people from MA are done using them up. There just isn't income equality anywhere!! Just kidding. :)

Emissions test only in Colorado, and that's only in Denver and Ft. Collins. No safety inspections.

Tennessee is a freedom state. No inspections of any kind. Heck, at least one out of ten cars on the road in Memphis isn't even registered.

Insurance is required to register, so that's probably why they're so many unregistered cars driving around.

In CO you have to pass emissions which includes checking your fuel filler and presence of catalytic converter but no "inspection" per se -

AZ. No inspection. Emissions on cars 5 years unless 1965 or older which are exempt. Then you have a classic car exemption if your car is 15 years or older and you have collector insurance. But this is only in the two big counties that have Tucson and Phoenix.

If you are outside of those... Let er rip

I believe TX is similar to CO - some "emissions" testing (for newer cars) in the Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, etc. areas, but not out in the boonies, but the emission testing is now more looking for error codes/check engine lights than sniffing the actual tailpipe exhaust. I think it has gotten more simple lately since anything 25 years old, or older, anywhere is just a safety inspection, and everything now 24 years old, and younger, is OBDII (so no tailpipe test for anyone anymore). The annual safety inspection is required in all of TX.

My biggest complaint is the "annual" part -- every 2 years would be more reasonable IMO.

Annual inspection is a PIA if you are out of state for any length of time.

A full set of teeth!!? [emoji848]

Lol. I used to live in Memphis. I recall we had some perfunctory annual inspection, emissions and whatnot. Given some of the complete hoopties I saw on the roads, it was very minimalistic.

In Texas, annual safety inspection for all plus emissions inspection in the most populous counties near Dallas, Houston, Austin and El Paso.

    Mississippi - nothing.

They used to have a $5 inspection sticker where they checked your lights, signals, tint, and to make sure you didn’t have a crack on your windshield - or at least that it wasn’t a large enough one to impact the view of the driver.

They dropped all that years ago. Now, nada. Just drive. A good 10% of cars aren't even registered now. I'm not kidding either. One out of ten. Cops don't care about anything except murder. Kind of reminds me of Miami after the boatlift.

I think the teeth joke fits MS a lot better than TN. For some reason, people in Memphis on average have good teeth. Probably the excellent water quality.

The much-maligned California process has not yet been described.

In California, cars are required to do an emissions test every two years. For pre-ODBCII cars, that means a sniff test at two speeds while on a resistance roller. For ODBCII and newer, it just means plugging into the data port and confirming there are no emissions related codes.

All other examination is pretty much non-existent. Last year, my daughter's boyfriend and I brought his new-to-him clunker in to get it SMOGged and back on the road. It barfed coolant all over the asphalt in front of the test station (radiator fan was not working). Lots of other issues. The technician did not blink an eye. He said he had lots of absorbent material and asked if we still wanted to get it tested. Although we chose to come back after we replaced the fan switch, the car passed SMOG on its first try.

We register our vehicles in Georgia. Zero inspections and only rear plate required.

The vehicles look so much cleaner without an ugly inspection sticker on the windshield or a front plate ruining the lines.

    Interesting.
    The water was tasty IIRC!

In Texas, you see a huge # of cars on paper plates. Hoopties more commonly than late model cats. Not sure if it's some sort of insurance avoidance scam, or whether Texans are buying cars left and right.
