What is this magnet doing in my 430 gearbox bell housing?

    I am working on a clutch job for a 430 F1. I went to install the new clutch position sensor and as I was maneuvering it in place, I heard a clank, and this little magnet pops out.

    It's about the size of a pencil eraser. For the life of me, I cannot see where it goes. There is no spot for it on the new sensor. There is no spot for it on the sensor sliding arm mounted on the side of the slave bearing.

    It must be a stray magnet the new sensor picked up, because I do not see where it belongs. Got any idea?

    When my brother wasn't looking I'd always throw in another bolt in his bucket. After spending time trying to find its home to no avail...he figured I screwed with him again...

    It should be opposite the sensor as the target magnet to allow the sensor to know position of clutch ..

    I am going by something that is pretty vague in my brain but worth checking

    I would hate for you to chase a ghost here but should only take a few seconds to look at old and new TO bearing and see if it should be there

    I think I get it now.

    The new sensor came with the sensor, and the magnet. Item 47 has two parts, the big sensor and the little round magnet that is meant to go into the item 50. Since I never disassemble item 50 the old magnet is still inside that little arm. I confirmed that the arm is magnetic. And there are no spots on the sensor body or the slider body (item 44) to accept a loose magnet. I feel good enough to button it all up.

    Flash, that hole is way too big for the magnet. There is only one loose magnet and two such holes that you showed. Look at item 47 on the diagram above. See the arrow pointing to the sensor and then a little round thing. That is the magnet.

    I did not mean to post that third picture of the $300 tool from Hill Engineering. But now that is posted, I just made that tool for the 13mm hidden nut behind the slave bearing. Mostly out of needing to do it now, and not waiting another two days, I cut up my 13mm brake line wrench, welded the head to the stem, and welded another throw away 3/8 extension. $10, tops.

    I watch that guy once in a while. I have to cringe when I see working around cars wearing flip-flops. Come on guys, a safe shop is a good shop.

    The magnet goes into the little periscope thing. https://www.ricambiamerica.com/165567-pin.html

    They can come dislodged; I think they get kinda pressed and glued into place -- but make sure to only apply the adhesive on the circumference. The hole on the periscope thing (165567) is how the position sensor reads it.

    @Ricambi America , that diagram on your website is all messed up. The numbers don't match up with the descriptions and there are too many items not even listed in the description lines. I got awfully confused.

    Agreed... I always shake my head as well! But that is probably the best soup to nuts video I have found on doing a 360/430 clutch job.

    In that video which diagnostic tool is he using? He doesn’t say in the video or the video description and I’m too lazy to scroll through all 800 plus comments!

    That magnet goes n the pin that is on the throw out bearing. Depending on who you purchased your F1 sensor from it would have come with a new magnet.
    Did you transfer the sensor pin to the new throw out bearing. If so did you par careful attention to the direction the screw face pointed. It must point towards the flywheel. Second did you install the new magnet with a new oring?
