Inside the large rectangular hole (metal cylinder side to the right) at a 45 degree (?) angle.

You've got a broken flap actuator (plastic) drive pin.

You'll have to remove the luggage liner and the recirculation flap actuator and fit a stronger brass drive pin (from Ricambi or Hill Engineering UK)

You may need to slip a loop of cotton thread under the flap when fitting the flap to lift it slightly. Sometimes the drive pin doesn't align with the flap.

Yes that is the blend air flap which allows air from outside to enter when open and when closed recirculates in the cabin very common failure. You can rig it like I did on my car and I rigged it in the closed position with some small copper wire because I never want hot air coming in the cabin down here in florida!

The hard part is removing the luggage liner. Here are a few tips:
Remove rubber seal... it just pulls off
Remove metal plate around fresh air intake (It's good to tape over the water drain hole in the front left hand corner of the assembly.... it's a magnet for screws. Good luck getting them out)
Remove metal trim screws and other screws taking note of which screw goes where.
There may be other hidden screws holding the luggage liner pieces together. Take note of which part of the luggage liner goes on top or underneath the adjacent part.
Remove luggage light connector (if required) via the screw down access cover on the left.
The liner is very fragile, treat it with care when removing it.

Use this opportunity to inspect the hidden aircon fuse and holder and look for brake/clutch hydraulic leaks.

Correct. The system has no position feedback circuit. The actuator motor just stalls when it hits the endstops. I don't think it has a blend function per se.

I can't recall what happens to the actuator if it doesn't find the endstops. Does it keep running or time out? If you do tape it up, make sure the duct tape doesn't find its way into the... er... duct :D
