In most cases when a model is introduced, issues are addressed with the newer cars. However this is not the case with the 355. The things that troubled the early cars continued with the later cars including valve guides according to some of the professionals that work on them.

Personally, I didn't care about the 95 thing so I don't need to feel better about my purchase...

I would have gladly bought any year of the 355 because I always dreamed of owning one. However, a quick search on Fchat revealed that a lot of Ferrari guys who know a lot more than I about the 355 seem to prefer the 355 for a variety of reasons.

That being said, there isn't enough of an advantage to hold out for a 95...If you find a good opportunity to buy one, any year is totally fine and the age thing isn't so relevant since it's only a car that had a 5 year production run so 95,96...99, they're all good!!!

As of 2000, they pretty much abandoned the 355 once Ferrari became more of a production car with the arrival of the 360 thus rendering the 355 its status (for many here) as the last "real" Ferrari.

They did not give up on the 456 but made improvements and reintroduced it as the 456M for modificata. There was no such M ever done to the 355 and the valve guide issue can occur in any of the 355 years, not only the early cars...

    Completely incorrect.

Valve guides changed in the later cars (there is much debate precisely when) although the Factory TSB to upgrade from bronze to sintered steel guides did not come out until 2002. This does not mean no 1998 or 1999 cars ever had the issue; it means the 355 production and materials changed over the lifecycle of the car's production. That is my point.

And there were other updates/upgrades--some of which have been pointed out by VERY knowledgable individuals on this site. One example is the headers were supposedly upgraded in 1997-1998.

The Ferrari way of building cars is very Italian: subtle items change from year to year or car to car almost without warning. Features are slightly different between cars. A friend has a 98 Spider that has the default suspension setting as Sport. My default setting is Comfort.

I think there is a feeling that some of us believe that a '95 year is the only one worth buying. This is simply not true. I have always believed that you buy the nicest car you can regardless of year.

What I feel, and what most feel, is that if you have two 355's, and all things are equal, you buy the 95.

On the issue of removing the cats and feeling more power, I would have to say that the power gain is marginal at best. My cats are new and hidden away in my garage, but when I took them out I did not notice a huge increase in performance by any means.

You are correct. There are many later year cars having the valve guides done and bronze guides were found even in one of the fioranos years ago. The headers were always the same. Ferrari went to a single main brain (5.2) for cost savings period. They tried to offset the power loss by changing the heads(increasing compression). Some of the power loss was recouped but not all. All the 355s are beautiful and run great but those in the know will opt for a 2.7 and that is why in the coming years a 2.7 will comand more dollars. This comment is not ment to demean any 5.2 owner. It is simply a fact.

As for the valve guides, they seem to be a completely random thing...from 95 to 99. It isn't true that the bronze ones were used only in the earlier cars...

Another difference.... On the 2.7 cars, the air intake is in the C pillar. (GTB and GTS) In the later cars, the intake is ducted through the doors and must pass the radiator fans. Seems odd to me.

Also, there's no quirky alarm system on the 2.7 requiring red and black fobs.

At the end of the day, they are all 355s, and are one of the best Ferraris built. To me, the quirks of the 355 and its relative expensive maintenance all add to its appeal. You've gotta be a real enthusiast to own one of these puppies, and, IMHO, it's absolutely worth it.

Back to the car that caused me posting this thread, it is the 95 GTB at FOA. We were able to reach an agreement on price for a bit below the asking price (but not very much!). I have a deposit down and if all goes smoothly will have a set of my very own 355 keys in my pocket next weekend! I am pumped! I am having a compression/leakdown performed this week, so the sale is subject to that being acceptable and my personal inspection/test drive when I fly over next weekend. Fingers crossed!

As for the car itself, to recap, it is a rosso/black 95 GTB, 6 speed, factory sport seats, 16K miles, had about $20K of work including major completed at FOA a few weeks ago. There was a lot of other work done at the time, including 4 new tires, new clutch, new battery, de-sticky everything, several new interior trim pieces (ash tray, HVAC panel, etc), new engine mounts, new radiators, repainted valve covers, airbox covers, and intake plenum.

I heard about the car through a grapevine I trust that it is a VERY nice example as 355's go, with paint and interior that essentially look new. It was funny timing. I was actually about to put an offer in on a V8 Vantage at lunchtime on the very day I heard about this car. I got a call that morning from a trusted source saying to wait on the Vantage and look at this car QUICK, because it was a damn good one.

The 355 has essentially been THE dream car for me from the time they came out, and I have always known I would own one some day and have been casually shopping them for a couple of years. I've even got a picture of me in 1996, freshman year of college, at the old FOA sitting in a new 355. I blew that thing up poster size and it hung on my dorm room wall to serve as inspiration all through school, and it has been hanging in my garage since! But I pretty much have terminal car ADHD and somehow settled on getting a Vantage first and putting the 355, E-Type, 360, etc etc off for a while. Then this car popped up and plans got changed. I figure over the next 3-5 years it will be much harder to come by a nice 6 speed non-spider 355 than it will be to come by a nice Vantage. Plus the Vantage is still depreciating quickly while the 355 seems to have bottomed a bit.

Anyway, sorry for rambling, I'm just PUMPED! On to the car in question: http://www.ferrarimaseratiofatlanta.com/1995-ferrari-f355--c-574.htm

Mine is a 95 and the default setting is sport. so this varies randomly.
