To grossly oversimplify matters of subjective taste and choice: if one must always have the latest, fastest and "most improved" car of any type, choosing the 488 over the 458 is indeed a no-brainer. I've always had eclectic taste in cars, and presently own three Ferraris that span 40 years, and include examples of the first mid-engine generation (246 GT) and the fifth mid-engine generation (458). I don't rule out ever buying a newer Ferrari, but am quite content owning the slowest mid-engine Ferrari (the aforesaid 246 GT) and (in my personal opinion) a trail-breaking Ferrari (the 458). My F430 Spider (the "middle child"), while to some people a crude riff on a 360, is the most powerful stick-shift mid-engine Ferrari ever made, and will most likely never lose that distinction. No one of us will ever convince a critic of the correctness of our choices, because they flow from our tastes and opinions, which can be nothing other than the end products of our own subjectivity. Therefore, buy what you like, and be content to leave it at that! Fred

While I will almost certainly buy a 488, I have to agree with you about the 458 its a stunning machine that as a complete package is almost impossible to beat!

Man you guys rag on everything new... When the speciale came out everyone ragged on it too... One comment that I remember was " it looks like a catfish". I even had my doubts when I ordered mine, now it's one of the best they made and everyone wants one.... Weather you like it or not the 458 is old news fellas.... deal with it!!!!! Lol

The 488 looks terrific and will be an awesome car.. It won't be getting beat by everything else out there either.... I even have a few lambo friends asking if I can help them get one... But I can't...

Imo the side vents and door handles are necessary aerodynamic enhancements, sacrificing otherwise smooth lines (take a look at the red car pictured in this thread and tell me if that is attractive). I thought the 360 was a (clean sheet) beautiful car, but the 430 bastardized its lines for the sake of technological advancement. The same may be said of the 458/488. All of these cars are beautiful examples of Ferrari, but if we have to rank order them, I am sure we all have preferences. IMO, in both cases (360/430 and 458/488) form has been subordinated to function. Since we all want a high performance car, it makes sense, but imo to suggest that either the 430 or 488 is more aesthetically pleasing than its predecessor, is a stretch. None of this is life and death, but just the way all of us react to and experience a new car.

    Just for the record I prefer the 328 over 308, 355 over 348, 360 over F430 and finally 458 over the 488.
The door handles on the 488 are not the best in design yet they suit the car. However the 458's door handles are so much nicer and also suit the car.

The problem with the door handles of the 488 is the handles damage the paint of the door. I see that on the dealer demo car

Wow, really. People debating about not buying a Ferrari because of the door handles?

And you won't date Kate Upton either because her boobs are too big?

Actually, the kate upton analogy is a little whacked. If you have seen the 488 in person you would know the vents and door handles are not Ferrari's finest design efforts....imagine kate without teeth or pot belly.......

Mclaren dealt with door handles beautifully on the 650/675. Imagine door handles on the la ferrari....the door handle on the 458 works given the unique lines - but the 488 is a hatchet job...that said, the side vents are the much bigger problem from a design perspective.

Hmmm...are we all forgetting that the pedigree of Ferrari is to bring learnings from optimal performance to the road? Are we forgetting that Ferrari is grounded in the philosophy of selling road cars to fund F1 racing? Thread is beginning to sound like Bentley or Rolls Royce thread..

If you like it and what it stands for ... Buy it.... If you dont.... Buy something you like...

Side vents is the least of the purpose... They lead air through rear to reduce drag... Have you seen the new gt40? It's the same except the aero effect the is so visible...

What's wrong with people voicing their opinion about a design feature of a new car. We obviously all love and are passionate about the brand otherwise we wouldn't have signed up to this forum, and of course if you don't like something you won't buy it, but I think it is great to have an intelligent debate amongst people that have a real knowledge of the subject (Ferrari) and that we have a forum like this to discuss it.

    Exactly ☺

... And I'm arguing positively for a design that gives preference to features and knowledge carried over from the learnings in racing... That's how my passion ties to Ferrari ☺

Nothing wrong with that... And nothing wrong with those that argue from a stance with preference to looks... Just two different angles to the brand.

You'll see that I've made the same point earlier in thread.

For the record... I have a 458 and love it to death and I won't sell it when I get my 488.... They are both special in my eyes.

Beautifully? Guess you've never tried to open a McLaren door on a less than perfect day when there's mud/wet on the bodywork. Bring hand wipes!

Quite true indeed. Never thought about it until a friend of mine picked me up in his 650S back in November, on a day where the roads were slushy and dirty after a short snowfall.

I like the 488 handles and side vents. I think they bring something unique to the table.
