Armchair aviators: what's your favorite warplane? Growing up, mine was definitely the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. From the 2.5 foot GI Joe "Sky Stryker" toy, to Top Gun to the SEGA game After Burner, F-14's were everywhere in the early 80's. Even Robotech's mech vehicles bore a striking resemblance. Of course, in the Countach excess of the 80's people loved things like the gadgety swing-wing designs. I had a small collection of books and encyclopedias on warplanes, and as a kid could spout off exhaustive trivia about the F-14's Pratt & Whitney turbines, performance stats, and even it's weapons systems featuring AIM (9?) and long-range Phoenix missiles. Indeed, as a kid I knew more about F/A-18's than Fords or Ferraris.
I grew up watching F-4's, A-7's, F-16's, and A-10's at the bombing range next to my hometown. The best was from the control tower with magnetic targets for strifening next to us. Also cool was being right off the base in the open hunting or fishing and having 4 jets at tree tops going over. The pilots use to have fun, several tower buzzes and the lake we use to fish next to the range they would come right over the water and lift up over the dam. All were cool, I liked the looks of the F-4's the best, but the A-10's on strifening runs were the coolest.
Hard to pick just one: P-51D Mustang http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/p-51/p51.shtml scroll down and click to hear a Merlin F-4U Corsair F-4 Phantom F-14 Tomcat Multi: B17 Flying Fort - no contest there, IMO Oops, just noticed "Fighter JETS" - sorry
For me, it was a growing up thing too. My father was a Navy dentist attached to the Marines (1952-1955), stationed in Edenton, North Carolina. After clinic hours, we would go to the airfield where I loved watching these F9F Panthers in operation. There's something about these first generation jet fighters which I still find visually appealing: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

I agree, but for me it's the F-86. That was back when jets were still mechanical things without computers, etc. I also like the Vietnam era jets for some reason. Theres a thud on display across the street from my office. I actually found a picture of it on the internet, shown below. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Although it's a trainer and not a fighter, I like the L39 because its about the only jet that maybe I might be able to afford one day if i get lucky. I especially like the Czech paint scheme of the first one. One mistake the soviet union made, among other things, was to replace the lion with a red star. It's pretty close for me between the Grumman F-14 and the Sukhoi S-47 Berkut. I would probably pick the Berkut now because it's very maneuverable. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
LOL! Grumman did the same thing on a prototype of theirs--the X29. http://www.eichhorn.ws/assets/images/grumman_x29a_fsw.jpg The design is said to increase fuel efficiency and maneuverability. I think it looks cool, but Sukhoi unfortunately made the SU-37 (S-47 Berkut was the proto) with rear swept wings. Edit: Some more stats on the Berkut: Max Level Speed at altitude: 1,555 mph (2,500 km/h) at sea level: 870 mph (1,400 km/h) Initial Climb Rate: 45,275 ft (13,810 m) / min Service Ceiling: 61,680 ft (18,800 m) Range typical: 2,100 nm (3,880 km)
Yeah i was gonna say maybe they got the idea from Grumman. It does look remarkably like the X29. Coincidence? I guess the design doesnt work that work that well because it was never persued.
If I remember the article in Air & Space magazine correctly, the X29 is inherently unstable and will not fly (aerodynamically speaking). It's the computers and fly-by-wire that allows it to fly at all. Similar to the F-16 but that design is, obviously, more conventional. Probably too much of a hassle to get all the systems in synch with each other when used as a fighter jet. Just a guess....
A10 for me... I remember being on the beach, at the house in Cape Cod and the A10's would fly over the beach slow as hell... I always thought that was the coolest thing. Here we have F16's flying over the house from Luke AFB.
I don't believe the SU-37 and the S-47 are the same planes. Su-37 is an updated Su-35 with active nozzles(360 degrees as opposed to up and down asin the F22) and avionics.
The two at the top of the list is F-104 and F-4 (kinda ugly but in a good way) F-104 below. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
F-4. (kinda ugly but in a good way) I have the first picture in my living room. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
