What is a Challenge Grille....exactly? Sorry for such a newbie question; but, I am a newbie. My understanding is that it is a mesh grille, black in color, on the rear of various mid-engine F-cars to allow heat to escape from the engine compartment. I test-drove a F355 Berlinetta recently that had a red mesh grille. Is that usual?

I hear a lot about built-in radar detectors. Are they standard equipment on recent year models? On any Ferrari I've ever sat it, I've never noticed anything that resembled controls for any sort of a radar detector. Where would you look to see if it is installed in a particular car (355, 360 type models)?

For a 355, what is a normal engine temp? After my 355 test-drive yesterday, it seems that the water temp was between 190 and 200 degrees when we returned. Normal?

Many thanks in advance! About my 355 search: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60871

They were originally developed for the Challenge series, thus 'Challenge Grill'. It is a (normally black) grill with small holes in it that allow heat to escape the engine bay. The non-Challenge rear is a solid panel. Some owners have had the Challenge grill painted to match the car, that may be what you saw in your test drive. Challenge grills were available on the 355 and 360.

No, these are not factory options. The installation of detectors will vary depending on who, what, where, etc. Ask the current owner to demonstrate any detector installs.

    John...

As Tillman said, the Challenge grill started with the Challenge Series... Challenge grills were first found on 355 Challenge cars (as seen in the first picture below, S/N 104504)... They were soon seen on 355 road cars (as seen in the second picture below, S/N 100489)... When the 360 Challenge Series began, all the 360 Challenge cars had Challenge grills (as seen in the third picture below)... So, of course, this was an option on 360 Modena and 360 Spider road cars... However, beginning with the 360, there was also the option of front Challenge grills as well (as seen in pictures four and five below, S/N 119984)... The difference between front Challenge grills and regular front grills can be seen in the last two pictures (S/N 119984 & S/N 118655)...
