Ok, I might not tackle the upcoming major for the 355, but I had a liitle time to work on this project. The second is a mockup w/71" DLP........... What do you think? Custom doors for the bottom cabinets and glass shelves for the sides next. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was going to put in a little wet bar sink but plumber said no go. I couldn't get a drainage line without major work. A little fridge is on the list
The cabinets look great. I have had a Samsung 50" DLP for a year, and am sold on the picture. Are you going to put your equipment behind solid doors and use an infrared network for your remotes? They are still working out the bugs on one I had installed near a 40" Samsung LCD. Getting too much signal off the TV and need a more shielded/filtered receiver, but like the idea of everything hidden but the TV.
Thanks.......... Samsung is coming out with LCD DLPs at the end of the year. I was going to pick up one of the current generation sets, but not having a wheel is a big plus. I hate having to wait longer for this....... Yes, I plan on a IR emmiter / receiver setup from Xantech. I have one through the whole house system and it works great. Keep the cables away from high voltage and it should work great.
Hey Uro, I was wondering if you'd chime in........ Thanks I used solid maple w/biscuits and finish nails. Should be covered by door over hang. It will get a nice dark stain when complete with a semi gloss coat or two ( or three) This is the door example Image Unavailable, Please Login
Your work looks very good. Make sure you try several fillers on scrap material to choose the best color match and uniform stain absorption. Use 3 coats of finish, no less. Sand lightly with 220/320 between coats, and remove dust completely (a vacuum cleaner with the round brush works good). BTW, after stain make sure you deal with the rags properly--spontaneous combustion is very real, especially with stains like Minwax that have high concentrations of linseed oil. Again, nice work!
Thanks, Good pointers, also.................... I have a Central Vac that makes short work of dust. It works great.
As far as Remotes go, i'd consider looking at the Logitech Harmony series. I have the 880 and love it. The 890 is RF and comes with an IR emitter than can be installed in the enclosure with your equipment. PC programmable, color screen, awesome feel. The 880 is like $250 ($190 online) and i think the 890 is like $350 ish with 1 emitter.
Very nice setup & choice of material, fit and finish. Looks like you've covered all the bases and don't need much help - so, just out of curiosity: Are you going to leave the ceiling above the TV painted or cover it with some ply? I imagine you've already thought of this - but, if so inclined, you should be able to cover the screws on the backrail with plugs. By 3-way hinges, you mean European Hinges? What we called 'em when I built Cabinets anyway - funny thing is, now my Brother has a Cabinet shop.
Very funny Redhead! This is MBR so I don't think the keg will be going in. A small fridge with bottled H20 maybe. Not sure if compressor noise will be a problem. "you mean European Hinges" Yes they are, but not all "European hinges" are three way adjustable. One of the things I've enjoyed most about this project is the pace. I step back and look and think. I might let a week go by before moving forward. So, as of now, I plan on keeping the drywall ceiling showing with a few recessed lights. There will be 1/2" custom glass shelves on the sides. Flush dowels will be used to conceal the few exposed recessed screws. The whole exterior will be stained a dark rich color. The worst is having to wait for the next gen TV. Seems Samsung and others have announced LED DLPs. I'm holding out....if I can for the 71" this was designed for. It should conceal the back wall so none of the drywall is exposed. About the Harmony remote - I've read some reviews about the RF one and they were not very gd. I was looking at that remote though.
I've heard good things about that.... It's the RF one that had issues. It's been out for awhile so maybe new firmware has fixed the issues. When I'm ready to purchase I'll look at the reviews again for updates. Thanks
i've gone through harmony remotes and a few others... for the money harmony is purdy decent... you can def get better, but will pay for better... so what does that mean? get whatever fits yer needs and budget... lots of good remotes available at various price ranges
There are very few good RF remotes with IR emmiters. I will prob. go the xantech ir receiver route....... Dino, 71" isn't what it used to be. That's a 46" sitting up there now in std. format. It takes about a 65" to get the height about the same in wide screen. All TVs are going wide screen HD so I didn't want a TV with less height. IT should be the perfect size for 15' away.
